Due to the extreme dangers of mixing-up normal and "less-lethal" ammo, many (if not most) police departments designate specific shotguns to be used '''only''' with less-lethal ammo. These shotguns are typically marked with brightly colored furniture or paint. As the 870 is by far the most commonly used shotgun among United States law enforcement, these variants regularly appear in the hands of fictional law-enforcement.

The Remington Model 870 shotgun debuted in 1950 and has been used by police and military ever since as well as hunters, sportsmen and gun enthusiasts. The Remington Model 870 is arguably the world's most widely owned and used shotgun, with over 9 million in civilian hands.

For information on how to tell the Remington Model 870 series shotguns apart from Mossberg and Winchester shotguns, please visit the 12 Gauge Pump Shotgun page.

Remington Model 870 "Less Lethal" (Green) - 12 gauge
Remington Model 870 "Less Lethal" (Orange) - 12 gauge

Due to the extreme dangers of mixing-up normal and "less-lethal" ammo, many (if not most) police departments designate specific shotguns to be used only with less-lethal ammo. These shotguns are typically marked with brightly colored furniture or paint. As the 870 is by far the most commonly used shotgun among United States law enforcement, these variants regularly appear in the hands of fictional law-enforcement.

A&K M870 Full Metal airsoft shotgun

Instantly recognizable by the short box magazine and obviously plastic finish, this inexpensive, mass-produced airsoft replica of the Remington Model 870 is often used as a background prop in low-budget movies. Even though this replica is clearly based on the Remington Model 870, some versions mysteriously have 'Mossberg M590' (see image) in white on the left side of the receiver, just above the magazine.

The A&K M870 is based off the Maruzen CA870 but made out of zinc metal and has a real wood full stock and foregrip.
