The Degtyaryov Light Machine gun (Дегтярёва пехотный, Degtyaryov Pechotnyi) was developed by Vasily Alekseyevich Degtyaryov at the Soviet Small Arms design bureau and was the standard issue light Machine gun for the Red Army during World War II and some years after, until it was replaced by the RPK. The most common versions are the DP (Degtyaryov Pechotnyi), the DPM and the RP-46. The DP and DPM were issued in tank mounted versions known as DT models (DTM/DA). DA and its twin version DA-2 were mounted on airplanes.
Note 1: While it is common to anglicize the name of the weapon (and its inventor) as "Degtyarev" (and more rarely "Degtyarov"), it should not be pronounced literally. In the original language, the "e" has an umlaut (ё) and is pronounced "yo" rather than "eh". The umlaut often omitted in the anglicization process. Pronunciation-wise, Degtyaryov is the only correct pronunciation. Usage-wise, Degtyaryov is the more common way to refer to the weapon and its inventor, but writing the name either way is acceptable. The Degtyarev Plant for instance is better known with the anglicized name.
Note 2: Different sources are may designate the DP as DP-27 or as DP-28; this confusion arose because the DP was introduced in 1927, but was adopted in service in 1928.
The Degtyaryov machine gun and variants have appeared in the following films and video games used by the following actors:
