Heckler & Koch MP7
The Heckler & Koch MP7/MP7A1 is a submachine gun derived from work on the Heckler & Koch G11 and XM29 OICW projects. It originated in the NATO Personal Defense Weapon plan published in 1989, calling for a compact, lightweight, high-capacity select-fire weapon for issue to vehicle crews, comparable to the AKS-74U and using armor-piercing ammunition. The first iteration of the MP7 was the "G11 PDW," a machine pistol using a short 4.73x25mm variant of the G11's caseless round; a weapon based on this design using a conventional cased 4.6x30mm round was then developed as a possible underbarrel mount for the OICW's grenade launcher module. The first standalone variant shown in 1999 was simply called the "Heckler & Koch PDW." The production version was given the name the MP7, marketed as the successor to the MP5 to compete with the FN P90.
The MP7 is marketed as having three different "configurations": "Handgun," where the stock is retracted and the foregrip folded up, "AutoPistol," where the stock is retracted, but the foregrip is folded out, and "SMG," where the stock is extended and the foregrip is out. For classification purposes, though, it is always a submachine gun no matter what is done with the grip and stock.
The MP7A2 was introduced in 2014 and features a triple-rail handguard instead of the folding foregrip. It comes with a RAL8000 "tan" finish, like other recent H&K products such as the HK416 A5, HK417 A2, and MP5 MLI.
