The MG34 is a general-purpose machine gun produced by Germany during the Second World War. The forerunner of the more widely produced MG42, the weapon was noted for long production times due to use of time-intensive machined parts, but remained in production alongside its replacement throughout the war. It was developed to fit a tactical concept called the "universal machine gun," wherein the same weapon would be used in both the light and medium machine gun roles: what is today known as a general-purpose machine gun.

The forerunner of the more widely produced MG 42, the weapon was noted for long production times due to use of time-intensive machined parts, but remained in production alongside its replacement throughout the war. It was developed to fit a tactical concept called the "universal machine gun," wherein the same weapon would be used in both the light and medium machine gun roles: what is today known as a general-purpose machine gun.

A variation of the gun, the MG34 Panzerlauf, was commonly used as secondary armament on German tanks, since the MG42's barrel change system could not easily be operated when it was mounted. This version lacked a stock, featured an armored barrel shroud and could be fitted with a solenoid for remote firing. Tanks carried a kit to allow the Panzerlauf variant to be converted for ground use, including a stock and bipod.
+
The MG 34 could use several different feeding variations: for use as a medium machine gun, it was issued with loose 250 round metal belts with disintegrating links (which could be linked together as desired). When employed as a light machine gun it was instead used with a drum called the Gurttrommel 34 which mounted to the left side of the weapon and contained a 50-round belt. It could also use 75 round saddle drum magazines called Patronentrommel 34. To use the latter, the standard feed cover had to be replaced with a magazine holder. This feeding variant was mainly used early in the war and often when the MG 34 was utilized as AA gun or mounted on a tripod. Later in the war those were not supplied anymore as they were very complicated to reload and even needed a tool for this, and the ability to use this magazine was eliminated entirely on the MG 42.

A variation of the gun, the MG 34 Panzerlauf, was commonly used as secondary armament on German tanks, since the MG 42's barrel change system could not easily be operated when it was mounted. This version lacked a stock, featured an armored barrel shroud and could be fitted with a solenoid for remote firing. Tanks carried a kit to allow the Panzerlauf variant to be converted for ground use, including a stock and bipod. A characteristic feature of this version is the almost entirely smooth barrel with only a few holes. However, it is a Heavy Barrel that allows long shooting without the need to replace it. That is why the tank version was equipped with anti-aircraft sights by the infantry. Later in the war, the standard version of the MG 34 and the MG 34 Panzerlauf could be seen serving the infantry.

Already in 1937, it was decided to replace the MG 34 due to the time-consuming manufacturing process and the sheer costs. A competition for the design of a new machine gun was announced. The competition was joined by companies such as the then little-known Großfuß. And Rheinmetall, where Louis Stange worked and designed the MG 34 . The Großfuß company presented the MG 39 model, and the Rheinmetall company presented the MG 39 Rh model. At the very beginning, they decided to abandon the MG 39 Rh model due to the fact that it operated on the principle of gas discharge through a side hole in the barrel. Therefore, Großfuß was commissioned for further development work. Louis Stange did not want to give up and decided to adapt his MG 34 model to competition standards. This is how the MG 34S (S-schnell / fast) was created and presented to the committee. Due to the achievements of Louis Stange, it was decided to give the rifle for testing under the military designation MG 34/41 and the Großfuß rifle under the designation MG 39/41, and both rifles were sent to the Eastern Front. From the very beginning, the MG 34/41 did not perform well. However, the MG 39/41 performed perfectly. It was decided to introduce the MG 39/41 model into mass production under the designation MG 42. And further development work on the MG 34/41 was suspended.

 +
MG 34/41 - compared to the MG 34, it had a higher rate of fire up to 1,200 shots per minute. A shortened barrel and the possibility of feeding only from belts and a Gurtrommel 34 magazine. The structure was simplified to reduce production costs. It only fires with automatic fire. To simplify the design, the ability to change the mode has been removed.

MG 34

MG 34 - 7.92x57mm Mauser. Belt-fed.
MG 34 - 7.92x57mm Mauser. With Gurttrommel 34 - 50 round belt drum magazine.
MG 34 - 7.92x57mm Mauser. With Patronentrommel 34 - 75 round saddle drum magazine.

The MG 34 is a general-purpose machine gun produced by Germany during the Second World War.

MG 34 Panzerlauf

MG 34 Panzerlauf - 7.92x57mm Mauser.
MG 34 Panzerlauf - 7.92x57mm Mauser. With bipod and anti-aircraft sight.

MG 34/41

MG 34/41 - 7.92x57mm Mauser.
