Enfield No. 2
The Enfield No. 2 is a British double-action revolver that was intended to be the successor to the Webley Mk VI service revolver. Introduced in 1931, it has a smaller frame and is chambered in .38 S&W instead of the bigger .455 Webley caliber. One of the examples shown here was known as the No. 2 Mk I*, which features a bobbed 'anti snag' hammer due to troubles reported by tank crewmen. Supposedly, the first model's hammer spur would catch and snag.
Following World War I, the British Army sought a smaller, lighter revolver firing a .38 caliber round that produced lower recoil than the .455 Webley cartridge. Existing .455 caliber Webley revolvers offered excellent stopping power at close range, but the heavy recoil of the round hampered follow-up shots. The British government liked the .38 S&W round fired by the Webley Mk IV, but did not want to pay Webley & Scott for its design. In 1926-1927, the state-owned Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield Lock made changes to the lockwork and trigger mechanism, largely in the provision of a hammer safety lock and a separate cylinder lock. Like the Webley revolver series, it uses a top-break action to load. With these modifications the revolver was designated the Enfield No. 2. Its full title was Pistol, Revolver, Number 2 Mark 1. Because of its close visual similarities to the Mk IV revolver, Webley ended up suing the government and was eventually compensated £1,250.
The No. 2 was officially introduced in 1932. During World War II with demand outstripping the ability to produce the Enfield No. 2, the British government ironically ended up purchasing a large number of Webley Mk IVs for issue. The Enfield No. 2 served as the official sidearm of the British Army until 1954, when it was replaced by the Browning Hi-Power. Over 300,000 were manufactured during its production life.
