The '''AS Val''' is the assault rifle counterpart to the VSS Vintorez sniper rifle. It is equipped with a folding stock, pistol grip, and generally uses 20-round magazines (also usable by the VSS Vintorez), and it uses a slightly different 9x39mm round. It can also use a PSO-1 scope like the VSS Vintorez.

Unlike most assault rifles, the AS Val is not designed to fire without its integral suppressor attached, and to that end its front sights are mounted on the end of the suppressor rather than on the end of the barrel as is the case for most assault rifles. The current version of the AS Val moves the front sight to the handguard to facilitate un-suppressed use.

The '''SR-3 Vikhr''' (meaning "Whirlwind" in Russian), based on the AS Val, is an ultra-compact assault rifle with a 20-round magazine capacity developed for use by VIP protection teams and State Security operatives. Unlike its parent firearms, it cannot mount a suppressor, integral or otherwise.

A more recent variant, the '''SR-3M''' ("M" for "modernized") was developed as a more versatile alternative for Law Enforcement. It features a 30-round magazine capacity, a collapsible foregrip in the handguard, the ability to mount a detachable suppressor similar to that of its parent firearm, a front sight mounted on the handguard, and a redesigned folding stock.

Derived from the [[SR-1 Vector]] pistol, the '''SR-2 Veresk''' Personal Defence Weapon fires the proprietary 9x21mm SP-10 round designed to penetrate most body armour (despite the similarity in size, it is not identical to the 9x21 IMI round). It is gas operated, and its mechanism is similar to the SR-3 compact Assault Rifle. Both the SR-2 and the SR-2M (M for Modernized) can use 20- to 30-round magazines and feature a folding buttstock. The SR-2M however allows for red dot sights to be mounted, as well as possessing a folding vertical foregrip near the muzzle.

'''Translation notes:''' "SR-2" stands for "''Spetsialnaya Razrabotka 2''" in Russian, which means Special Development 2 in English. "Veresk," the weapon's codename, is the Russian word for the "Heather" plant.
+
A more recent variant, the '''SR-3M''' ("M" for "modernized") was developed as a more versatile alternative for Law Enforcement. Alongside new 30-round magazines, it features a folding foregrip attached to the handguard, the ability to mount a detachable suppressor similar to that of its parent firearm, a rear sight shifted further forward towards the rear of the handguard, and a redesigned folding stock based on that used by the Val. An even more recent '''SR-3MP''' differs only in a modified top cover with a Picatinny rail for optics, alongside two more rails on the left and right sides of the handguard and the ability to remove the stock from the rear of the weapon and mount it upside-down below the pistol grip, for easier aiming while using a bulletproof mask/helmet or night-vision goggles.

The AS Val and VSS Vintorez are a pair of integrally suppressed weapons developed in the Soviet Union in the 1980s. The two are mechanically identical, but feature different cosmetic parts and have different roles.

Specifications

(1987 - Present)

Type: Assault Rifle (AS Val), Sniper Rifle (VSS Vintorez), Compact Assault Rifle (SR-3 Vikhr)

Caliber: 9x39mm

Capacity: 10, 20 or 30 round Box Magazines

Fire Modes: Safe / Semi / Full-Auto

The AS Val and variants can be seen in the following films, television series, video games, and anime used by the following actors:

AS Val

AS Val - 9x39mm
AS Val with a PSO-1 scope - 9x39mm

The AS Val is the assault rifle counterpart to the VSS Vintorez sniper rifle.

VSSM Vintorez - 9x39mm

The VSS Vintorez (Vintovka Snayperskaya Spetsialnaya) is the sniper rifle counterpart to the AS Val assault rifle. It features a wooden stock, a PSO-1 scope, and normally uses 10-round magazines to facilitate easier use of the weapon from a prone position, though it can use 20-round magazines.

In 2016, Molot announced a civilian version of the VSS, opening up a line to produce commercial 9x39mm ammunition and also offering a variant chambered in the more common 7.62x39mm.
