The original predecessor of the Bushmaster ACR.
+
The Magpul Masada is the original version of the ACR, designed by Magpul Industries, who are better known for their firearm magazines and accessories. The name is comes from the Siege of Masada, an event which took place around 72 CE when Jewish rebels were besieged by the Roman Legion at a fortress known as Masada in what is now Israel. The Masada combines design cues from multiple rifles, including the AR-18, Heckler & Koch G36, and FN SCAR. It is built around a multicaliber receiver that could be quickly configured for 5.56x45mm, 7.62x39mm, or 6.8mm SPC. Production was licensed to Bushmaster Firearms International, who redesigned the weapon as the ACR.

In 2008, Magpul licensed the Masada design to Bushmaster, who would go to produce it as the the Bushmaster ACR (Adaptive Combat Rifle). The ACR features several upgrades to the original Magpul design to make it more resistant to dust and dirt. Production on the ACR halted in 2020 when Bushmaster's parent company, Remington, declared bankruptcy. In 2021, after the Bushmaster brand was acquired by the Franklin Armory company, plans were announced to reintroduce the ACR at some point in the near future.

The Remington ACR is a slightly modified, select-fire version of the Bushmaster ACR that was submitted for evaluation by the United States Army in the Individual Carbine competition, which sought to find a replacement for the M4 Carbine in US Army service. The competition began in 2011, but was cancelled in 2013 after two phases of testing without any designs selected.

Magpul Massoud
 +
The Magpul Massoud is a cancelled battle rifle derived from the original Masada design, chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO. The rifle is named after Ahmad Shah Massoud, a famed leader of the anti-Taliban Afghan Northern Alliance, who was killed two days before the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. While the Massoud never went beyond the prototype stage, the company Kinetic Research Group is currently developing the FOX-42 rifle, which incorporates many of the design features from the cancelled Massoud.

The Masada combines design cues from multiple rifles, including the ArmaLite AR-18, Heckler & Koch G36, and FN SCAR. It is built around a multicaliber receiver that could be quickly configured for 5.56x45mm, 7.62x39mm, or 6.8mm SPC. Production was licensed to Bushmaster Firearms International, who redesigned the weapon as the ACR.

Magpul Massoud

The Magpul Massoud is a cancelled battle rifle derived from the original Masada design, chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO. The rifle is named after Ahmad Shah Massoud, a famed leader of the anti-Taliban Afghan Northern Alliance, who was killed two days before the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. While the Massoud never went beyond the prototype stage, the company Kinetic Research Group is currently developing the FOX-42 rifle, which incorporates many of the design features from the cancelled Massoud.
