Handguns

Smith & Wesson Model 36

For the majority of the series, Detective Lennie Brisco (Jerry Orbach) carries a Smith & Wesson Model 36 revolver. Despite the NYPD having officially switched to automatic pistols on January 1st, 1994, more senior officers like Briscoe were grandfathered in and allowed to continue carrying revolvers.

In the teaser of "Patient Zero" (S14E03), a gunshot is heard offscreen, and then the camera swings around to a carjacker dropping a driver on the ground. It's later revealed that the driver is dead with a single gunshot wound to the chest, and a matching ".38" found in the driver's possession.

So where's the gun? Both hands are seen, but the gun is not seen in either hand.

Glock 19

Detective Ed Green (Jesse L. Martin) and other NYPD officers are armed with Glock 19 pistols.
