Supergirl is the superhero television series based on the DC Comics character. The series follows the adventures of Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist), who is the cousin of Kal-el, the superhero who comes to be known on Earth as Superman. Originally sent from Krypton to protect her cousin, Kara finds herself landing on Earth several years following Kal-el's arrival and discovering that he has already grown up while she remained the same age when she left. Now living on Earth without a mission, Kara is adopted by a human family and subsequently takes the name of Kara Danvers (in a nod to previous Superman universe adaptations, Kara's father is portrayed by Dean Cain, who portrayed Superman in the series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and her mother is portrayed by Helen Slater, who portrayed Supergirl in the 1984 feature film adaptation).
