The Model 16 Stielhandgranate is an improved version of the Model 15. The Brennzünder 16 stick cap was particularly resistant to moisture and the star-shaped plate improved the unscrewing of the cap, helpful in muddy conditions. But the model also had some negative characteristics; soldiers for example said that it made more smoke than anything else. So in 1917, the M16 was replaced by the Model 17.
