The Colt 1849 Pocket is in the series of several comercially sold pocket Colts including the [[Colt 1862 Police Pocket]] and the [[Colt Navy Pocket]] models. It most closely relates to the [[Baby Dragoon]] pistol. When te 1849 was first built, it very closely resembled the "Wells Fargo" Baby Dragoon with the lack of a loading lever. Once the loading lever was added to the design, this pistol become very popular as a hidden backup gun. The gun was great as a pocket pistol because of its size and its 5 shot capacity of .31 caliber balls. While it had little stopping power, it was better than being empty handed in a fight. The legendary Will Bill Hickock was believed to had carried on at some point as a backup pistol.
