Black Lightning is a superhero television series based on a DC Comics character of the same name. Cress Williams stars as Jefferson Pierce, a retired superhero known as "Black Lightning", due to his ability to manipulate electricity. Now working as a high school principal, Jefferson soon returns to the world of crime fighting when a gang proceeds to gain power in the city of Freeland. The series premiered on January 16 of 2018 in the US. The series was originally developed for the FOX channel, but later was picked up to series by the CW.
Despite its premiere on the CW, this DC series was originally not officially part of that network's Arrowverse until the 2019 crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths.
In January 2020, The CW renewed the series for a fourth season, which is set to premiere on February 8, 2021, and will serve as the series' final season.
