The Big Sleep was filmed in 1944 and 1945 (it was released in 1946) with Humphrey Bogart playing private detective Phillip Marlowe who takes on a blackmail case. During his investigation he uncovers a trail of murderers, pornographers, nightclub rouges and the spoiled rich. This Raymond Chandler story about legendary detective Philip Marlowe is directed by Howard Hawks. It was remade in 1978 with Robert Mitchum as Marlowe
