− | + | Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (MoHAA) is a first-person shooter video game developed by 2015, Inc., on a modified version of the id Tech 3 engine (Quake III Arena engine). The game was published by Electronic Arts for the PC and released between January 22-February 15, 2002, later published by Aspyr for Mac OS X on August of the same year, and again for Linux in 2004. It is the third main installment of the series, the first to be developed for the PC rather than consoles. The game was a critical and commercial success, considered to be a foundation for many future first-person shooter games inspired by it. One iteration is the Call of Duty (CoD) franchise, originally created by Infinity Ward (IW). Incidentally, the franchise was founded by MoHAAs former lead designers, Jason West and Vince Zampella, both whom later founded Respawn Entertainment after their departure from Infinity Ward. Also worth noting is retried USMC Captain Dale Dye has served as a military advisor for the development of the game, as well as provided voice-over for the background instructor in the training mission of MoHAA.
− | The | + | The game's story is a revised and continuous version of the original game, set between 1942-1945 in Algeria, Norway, France, and Germany. Once again, the story follows Mike Powell, another US Army lieutenant; an infantryman first served with the 34th Infantry Division, later assigned to the 1st and then 2nd Ranger Battalions, finally recruited to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the same as the original game's protagonist, Jimmy Patterson. Both characters are either assigned to different missions or fighting on the same grounds simultaneously, though story-wise they do not meet each other whatsoever. |

− | + | MoHAA received two expansions, both introducing new single-player campaigns, multiplayer maps and game modes, weapons, characters, and various fixes or gameplay additions. the first expansion, Spearhead (MoHAA:SH), was developed by TKO Software, Inc. and released on November 12, 2002. The story of Spearhead follows Sgt. Jack Barnes (voiced by Gary Oldman), a paratrooper with the US Army's 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. The campaign takes place in Normandy, Belgium and Berlin, as well as introducing two new allied factions; the British Army and the Soviet Red Army.
− | The | + | The second expansion, Breakthrough (MoHAA:BT), was developed by EA Los Angeles and released on September 22, 2003. The story of Breakthrough follows Sgt. John Baker, an infantryman with the US Army's 34th Infantry Division. The campaign takes place in Tunisia, Sicily, and Italy, as well as introducing a new axis faction; the Italian Army. |

− | + | As usual for early Medal of Honor titles; the player can only use a pre-assigned loadout of weaponry with enemy weapons that fall under the same category instead providing ammo to the player when picked up (even when both weapons wouldn't share ammo like the Thompson and MP 40) though oddly unlike the PS1 games, this is not a technical limitation as grenades, cheats and a few specific instances do give the player multiple weapons in the same category slot.

Revision as of 14:27, 14 April 2024
|
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (MoHAA) is a first-person shooter video game developed by 2015, Inc., on a modified version of the id Tech 3 engine (Quake III Arena engine). Incidentally, the franchise was founded by MoHAA's former lead designers, Jason West and Vince Zampella, both whom later founded Respawn Entertainment after their departure from Infinity Ward. Also worth noting is retried USMC Captain Dale Dye has served as a military advisor for the development of the game, as well as provided voice-over for the background instructor in the training mission of MoHAA.
The game's story is a revised and continuous version of the original game, set between 1942-1945 in Algeria, Norway, France, and Germany.
MoHAA received two expansions, both introducing new single-player campaigns, multiplayer maps and game modes, weapons, characters, and various fixes or gameplay additions. the first expansion, Spearhead (MoHAA:SH), was developed by TKO Software, Inc. and released on November 12, 2002.
The second expansion, Breakthrough (MoHAA:BT), was developed by EA Los Angeles and released on September 22, 2003. The story of Breakthrough follows Sgt. John Baker, an infantryman with the US Army's 34th Infantry Division. The campaign takes place in Tunisia, Sicily, and Italy, as well as introducing a new axis faction; the Italian Army.
As usual for early Medal of Honor titles; the player can only use a pre-assigned loadout of weaponry with enemy weapons that fall under the same category instead providing ammo to the player when picked up (even when both weapons wouldn't share ammo like the Thompson and MP 40) though oddly unlike the PS1 games, this is not a technical limitation as grenades, cheats and a few specific instances do give the player multiple weapons in the same category slot.
The following weapons appear in the video game Medal of Honor: Allied Assault:
Handguns
All Handguns can be used for a melee attack in the original game as a last-ditch attack with the expansions adding this feature to most other weapons.
Beretta M1934
Introduced in the Breakthrough expansion pack, the Beretta M1934 incorrectly features a 15-round magazine, when in reality it only has a 7-round magazine. Appears simply as "Beretta".
Colt M1911A1
The main sidearm used for all US Forces is the Colt M1911A1 pistol. It is the standard pistol for US forces in multiplayer.
High Standard HDM
The High Standard HDM pistol is available only in some singleplayer missions in Allied Assault, where Powell goes undercover. It is not available in multiplayer, except on modified servers. It is oddly depicted as manually-operated as the player character has to manually operate the slide to chamber a round after every shot.
Webley .38 Mk IV
Refered to simply as the "Webley Revolver", the Webley .38 Mk IV revolver appears in the D-Day missions of Spearhead, where the British paratroopers give one to Barnes. It is also available to the british forces in multiplayer in Spearhead and Breakthrough.
Nagant M1895
The Nagant M1895 revolver is available to Barnes in the first Berlin mission in Spearhead. It is also available to the Russian forces in multiplayer in Spearhead and Breakthrough. An inaccuracy during gameplay can be noticed during the revolver's reloading sequence; the revolver is shown as being reloaded whilst the hammer is cocked, but this is not possible in real life as the cylinder is locked in place when the hammer is cocked.
Walther P38
The Walther P38 pistol is used by the German forces in both single and multiplayer. It is only usable via cheats in single player outside of Spearhead where Barnes is equipped with captured German weapons in the Bastogne missions.
Submachine Guns
Beretta Model 38A
The Beretta Model 38A sub-machine gun is used by Italian forces in Breakthrough. The game simply calls it "Moschetto".
MP 40
The MP 40 is used by German Wehrmacht and SS soldiers, usually seen in the hands of officers and NCOs. In the single-player campaigns, the MP 40 is one of the most common weapons seen in the missions. In multiplayer, it is the dedicated SMG used by the German faction. The MP 40 in-game is one of the weapons that lacks a modeled bolt handle. Meaning that when reloading the weapon, the handle is actually missing, although the animation does show the character pulling an imaginary handle. Also, the handling animation show the character gripping the weapon from the magazine, which in real life is very inaccurate.
PPSh-41
The PPSh-41 is introduced in the Berlin mission in Spearhead. In the first expansion pack, Spearhead, it incorrectly had a 45 round magazine and a low rate of fire, in stark contrast to the real weapon. The second expansion pack, Breakthrough, keeps the low rate of fire and corrects the magazine size to a 71 round magazine.
Sten Mk V
The Sten Mk V sub-machine gun, minus the foregrip, is introduced in the D-Day missions of Spearhead. Also available to British forces in multiplayer in Spearhead and Breakthrough. The game incorrectly refers to it as the "Sten Mk. II".
Thompson M1A1
The Thompson M1A1 is used by US Army soldiers, usually seen in the hands of officers. In the single-player campaigns, it is either already available within the player's inventory, or can be picked up from fallen NPCs. In multiplayer, it is the dedicated SMG used by the US faction. The Thompson in-game is one of the weapons that lacks a modeled bolt actuator. Meaning that when reloading the weapon, the actuator is actually part of the weapon's texture, although the animation does show the character pulling the actuator back.
Shotguns
Winchester M1912 Trench Gun
A Winchester M1912 Trench Gun is available in-game, and is simply referred to as the "Shotgun".
Rifles / Carbines
Carcano M91/38 7.35 mm
The Carcano M91/38 7.35 mm is used in the Breakthrough expansion Pack.
De Lisle Carbine
The De Lisle Carbine pistol caliber carbine is featured in the Breakthrough expansion Pack; it is used by the player character while infiltrating an Italian airfield. It has an integrated suppressor and a 7 round magazine.
Enfield L42A1
The Enfield L42A1 is the standard British sniper rifle in-game, and is used during the Monte Cassino and Monte Battaglia levels. The L42A1's appearance is anachronistic, as it did not appear until the early 1970's. A more suitable weapon that could have been used would have been the Lee-Enfield No.4 Mk.I(T).
Gewehr 43 (with ZF 4 scope)
The Gewehr 43 is first used in the Spearhead expansion pack, where it is fitted with a ZF 4 scope.
Kar 98k
The Kar 98k is the standard German rifle, and is used by most of the German soldiers in-game. In the base game and the Breakthrough expansion, it can only be used outside of multiplayer in the Omaha Beach/Bizerte Harbor levels if the player avoids picking up the Springfield/Carcano rifle in these levels.
Kar 98k (with dow scope)
The German sniper rifle of choice and unlike it's base version, it is available normally to the player in the base game and expansions.
Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk I
The Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk I rifle is also seen in-game. It is used by British paratroopers in the Spearhead expansion pack.
M1 Garand
The first weapon available for use is the M1 Garand. It is used by the US rifleman in multiplayer.
Mosin Nagant M1891/30
The Mosin Nagant M1891/30 is used by Russian soldiers in the Spearhead expansion pack. It is the standard rifle for Russian rifleman in multiplayer.
Springfield M1903A4 (with M84 scope)
A Springfield M1903A4 rifle is used as a sniper weapon for the US forces.
Tokarev SVT-40 (with PU sniper scope)
A scoped Tokarev SVT-40 is the Soviet sniper rifle in the expansion packs. The player character can carry it when infiltrating Berlin in the Spearhead expansion pack's Russian campaign, and it is the standard sniper rifle for the Russians in multiplayer.
Assault Rifles
StG 44
The StG 44 is used by some late-game enemies.
Machine Guns
Breda Modello 30
The Breda Modello 30 is introduced in the Breakthrough expansion pack. Similarly to the Degtyaryov DTM-44, it is seen in fixed positions, despite being intended as an infantry-portable light machine gun; the Breda Modello 37 would be more appropriate for this role. A portable version was added in a patch but it only appears in multiplayer, even with cheats.
Browning Automatic Rifle M1918A2
The Browning Automatic Rifle M1918A2 is introduced in the 3rd campaign, during the hedgerow fighting.
Vickers-Berthier Mk.1
The Vickers-Berthier Mk.1 is the standard British machine gun (though the Bren Gun would have been more appropriate), and has a 30-round magazine capacity. It is first obtained in the Caltagirone Airfield level, and later during the fighting in Gela.
Grenades & Explosives
F-1 hand grenade
The F-1 hand grenade is the standard Russian hand grenade in-game.
M1A1 Bangalore Torpedo
The M1A1 Bangalore Torpedo is used by the rangers in Omaha Beach in the same vein as in Saving Private Ryan.
M2 Mine
The M2 Mine is added in the "Mines" class in Breakthrough for Allies players and are used in combination with a mine detector as the same "weapon".
M18 Smoke Grenade
The M18 smoke grenade is used during Spearhead's D-Day mission to provide temporary cover. What appears to be a slight reskin of the M18 is available to the Russians, incorrectly referred to as the "RDG-1". Oddly despite being fully functional against AI in both Spearhead and Breakthrough, only the former gives the player smoke grenades in its campaign, with Breakthrough only having smoke grenades in multiplayer without cheating.
Mk 2 hand grenade
The Mk 2 hand grenade is one of the high-explosive fragmentation hand grenades available in the game, being used by the Americans.
Model 24 Stielhandgranate
The Model 24 Stielhandgranate is yet another usable hand grenade in-game, and is used by the Germans.
Nebelkerze 39B
The Nebelkerze 39B smoke grenade is standard equipment for the Germans in-game.
No. 36M Mk. I
The No. 36M Mk. I is another fragmentation grenade available in-game, and is used by the British.
OTO Mod. 35
The OTO Mod. 35 is incorrectly used by the Italian Forces as their smoke grenade. The correct choice would have been the SRCM Mod. 35 FI.
Radio-controlled explosive
Radio-controlled explosive.
S-Mine
The Axis equivalent of the M2 Mine is the S-Mine.
SRCM Mod. 35
The SRCM Mod. 35 is used by the Italian Forces as their high explosive hand grenade. It can also be used by the player character when picked up.
Sticky bomb
Sticky bomb.
TNT
TNT explosive charge.
Launchers
M1 Bazooka
The M1 Bazooka is the standard American anti-tank weapon the the game. In the original game, it is used during the hedgerow fighting, and again in the infamous "Sniper Town" level. In Breakthrough, you use it the town of Gela and again in the fighting at Monte Battaglia.
PIAT
The PIAT is the standard British anti-armor weapon.
RPzB 54 "Panzerschreck"
The RPzB 54 "Panzerschreck" is the standard German anti-armor weapon in-game.
Schießbecher
Added in Breakthrough, the Schießbecher was added to replace the shotgun for the Germans in the multiplayer part of the game. The player is given 3 rifle grenades alongside still being able to use the actual rifle with primary fire firing the rifle and secondary fire loading a rifle grenade.
Mounted Machine Guns
Breda Modello 38
The Breda Modello 38 is mounted on an Autoblinda 41 armored car.
Breda-SAFAT 12.7
The Breda-SAFAT 12.7 is mounted on a Fiat G.55.
Browning M2 Heavy Barrel
Browning M1919A4
The Browning M1919A4 is used from the back of a Jeep in an early level.
Degtyaryov DTM-44
The Degtyaryov DTM-44 is introduced in the Spearhead expansion pack, and is seen in fixed positions in-game (rather odd for a weapon that could be either a tank-mounted machine gun or an infantry-carried one; the Maxim M1910 would be a more appropriate choice).
MG 15
During the mission in Algeria, you can see the plane in the hangar. Which resembles a Ju 87 R-2. Its defensive weapon is the MG 15.
MG 17
During the mission in Algeria, you can see the plane at the airport. Which resembles the Fw 190 A-1. Its offensive weapons are MG 17 and MG FF
MG 34 Panzerlauf
The MG 34 Panzerlauf it is mounted on German tanks.
MG 42
The MG 42 is frequently encountered in fixed positions.
In the Spearhead DLC, textures have been changed.
Mounted Cannons/Mortars
2 cm FlaK 30
The 2 cm FlaK 30 appears in some levels. In one of the missions, we have to sink a German submarine. Which is modeled after the U-Boot-Klasse X. One of the anti-aircraft weapons resembles: 2 cm FlaK. It is difficult to determine the exact model.
2 cm Flakvierling 38
The 2 cm Flakvierling 38 is available during the "Normandy - Welcome to France" (Moh spearhead) mission. Two weapons are on the field. You can use it and shoot.
2.8 cm sPzB 41
The 2.8 cm sPzB 41.
3.7 cm Flak M42

8 cm Granatwerfer 42 Mortar
The 8 cm Granatwerfer 42 Mortar.
8.8 cm Flak 37
The 8.8 cm Flak 37.
