Jackie Brown is the 1997 feature film adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel Rum Punch. Adapted for the screen and directed by Quentin Tarantino, the film stars Pam Grier as the title character, a flight attendant who finds herself in the middle of a predicament involving an arms dealer, a bail bondsman and a large sum of cash. The film, which was a tribute to Pam Grier's years starring in 1970's blaxploitation films, also starred Samuel L. Jackson, Robert De Niro, Michael Keaton, Robert Forster, and Bridget Fonda. The characters of Ordell and Louis were previously introduced in Elmore Leonard's 1978 book The Switch, which subsequently was adapted into the 2013 feature film Life of Crime.

When Max Cherry (Robert Forster) picks up Jackie Brown (Pam Grier) from jail, he had to leave his Colt Detective Special at the security gate office. He later returns it to his glove-box in his car where Jackie Brown discovers it while checking for cigarettes inside. Without Max knowing it, she "borrows" it for later use and gives it back to Max the next day.
