Walther P5
The Walther P5 is a German semi-automatic pistol manufactured by Walther. Its design was conceived in the mid-1970s and targeted primarily for the German law enforcement market, who were seeking to replace the aging Walther PP series in service with a 9x19mm pistol with more modern modern design and safety features. Utilizing recoil-operated, locked-breech operation, the P5 is essentially a redesigned Walther P38 with a slide that fully encloses the barrel, and thus uses many of the same design principles as the older pistol. Two variants were offered- the smaller and lighter P5 Compact and P5 Lang (Long), which features an extended barrel that brings its silhouette closer in line to that of the P38.
The P5 was introduced in 1977, and while well-made and highly praised, was expensive to both manufacture and purchase. Most German police forces, its intended target market, instead chose the cheaper SIG-Sauer P225 as their new sidearm throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Production ceased in 1993, with about 110,000 manufactured. The Dutch National Police Corps used the P5 as their official sidearm until its replacement by the Walther P99Q in 2013. The P5 remains one of Walther's less successful products, and is relatively obscure outside of Europe. Its replacement was the Walther P88, designed to be cheaper and easier to produce.
