Resident Evil Outbreak (2004)

Resident Evil Outbreak is a multiplayer co-op Resident Evil game released for the PlayStation 2, featuring online connection capabilities. It revolves around specific survivors attempting to escape from Raccoon City during the zombie outbreak.

A sequel was released, called Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2. It is very similar to the first game in terms of gameplay, and many of the weapons that appear in the first game also appear in File #2.

Besides the colossal amount of "Melee" type weaponry, various firearms are featured in-game.

Firearms in this game are handled differently from previous Resident Evil games. They suffer from damage drop-off; the further the enemy, the less damage that weapon will do.

Most weapons reload slowly by inserting individual cartridges. Characters that wield high-capacity weapons such as semi-automatic handguns or machine gun-type weapons require magazines to reload quickly, otherwise cartridges are inserted individually into the magazine. They are shown as if the cartridges are inserted into the chamber of the weapon, generally an inaccuracy on Capcom's part.

Two characters, Kevin and Alyssa, are capable of performing the "Pot-Shot" ability with most handguns, which increases damage on a per shot basis by aiming a weapon and being stationary for a few seconds which will cause Kevin/Alyssa to readjust their aim and do extra damage, with Kevin getting more extra damage than Alyssa. It is also possible to instantly break out of a zombie's grab by shooting it in the head with a pistol by holding R1/R2 when grabbed although this appears to heavily reduce the damage of the firearm despite shooting the zombie in the head.


Beretta 92FS

Said to be standard sidearm for RPD Officers and is simply labeled as the "Handgun" in-game. The Beretta 92FS carries 15 rounds of 9x19mm ammunition and is the most common firearm in the game.

A Handgun Magazine can be found for this weapon in select stages that can be loaded with spare ammo and can be used to drastically reduce reloading time by simply swapping out the gun's current magazine with a loaded spare. Empty magazines will need to be reloaded before they can be used again.

Mark Wilkins, one of the Survivors of the game, carriers a customized Beretta ("Mark's Handgun") which cannot be transferred amongst characters. It supposedly inflicts less damage than other handgun, but the damage stays consistent at longer ranges than the traditional Handgun. He starts off with a Handgun Magazine as an extra item in File #2, which can also be loaded into the standard Handgun. His Handgun Magazine can be traded between players and can be used to reload the default Handgun as well.

SIG-Sauer P228

The SIG-Sauer P228 is one of the handguns commonly found in the "Below Freezing Point" chapter and is called the "Handgun SG". It is also present in the flashback scenario in File #2 on harder difficulties. It fires 9x19mm rounds in 13-round magazines. It features the worst damage drop-off, doing the most damage at close range. An SG Magazine can sometimes be found in File #2.

Beretta 93R

Called the "Burst Handgun" in-game, the Beretta 93R is found in several main scenarios and minigames, depending on difficulty. It uses 9x19mm rounds and has a 20 round magazine. It fires in 3 round bursts only, and does significantly less damage per shot than the other handguns. However, it can fire 3 times as fast, in effect doing 3 times the damage. A Burst Magazine can sometimes be found on scenarios like "Desperate Times". It features the same damage drop-off as the Beretta 92FS, but lower accuracy. The "Pot-Shot" ability does not work for this handgun.

Colt M1911A1

The ".45 Auto for Kevin" seems to be an original run Colt M1911A1. While the miniature item icon in-game shows brown wooden grips, both the promo shot and the actual in-game model have black grips. In the game, the .45 Auto is the most powerful non-magnum handgun available. Kevin's extra item in File #2 is a magazine to rapidly reload his weapon, though ammunition for it (.45 Auto Rounds) is scarce in both games. It has an accurately-depicted 7 round capacity magazine, making manual reloading relatively quick. Kevin can use his "Pot Shot" ability to increase the damage dealt with each shot by 4x, and the weapon features excellent damage drop-off at range, similar to Mark's Handgun. As this is Kevin's "Special Item," it cannot be given to any other character, but all "Kevin-Type" NPCs (costumes) come equipped with it.

Browning Hi-Power

Called the "Handgun HP", this weapon appears in File #2's "Desperate Times" scenario and the Elimination minigame. It holds 13 rounds and can be loaded with its own HP Magazine. The in-game description describes it as "A handgun with high accuracy. It uses 9mm parabellum rounds."

Glock 17

Called the "Handgun GL", the Glock 17 can be found in File #2's "Underbelly" scenario, depending on the difficulty chosen, and on the Elimination minigame on any difficulty. It is the weakest handgun in the Outbreak series, but has a higher ammunition capacity than others, rivaled only by the Burst Handgun. It can be loaded with its own GL Magazine. It is described as "A handgun made of a super-tough polymer."

Glock 17 (3rd Generation) - 9x19mm

Smith & Wesson Model 36 "Chiefs Special"

Simply called the "Revolver" in-game, the Smith & Wesson Model 36 "Chiefs Special" is exclusive to File #2. Its item description refers to it as "The M36 Chief Special. It uses 38 special rounds." The revolver is surprisingly weak, only being about as strong as the handguns. It can be found in the "Wild Things" scenario on harder difficulties and Elimination 1 on Very Hard, but because it does not share the same ammunition with the regular handguns and only being mildly stronger than them, this gun is not particularly useful. A speedloader can be found to reduce the reload time, which works in the same way as the magazines for the handguns and automatic weapons.

Smith and Wesson Model 36 - .38 Special

The Smith & Wesson Model 29 is featured as the game's magnum revolver and is simply called "Magnum Revolver". It fires .44 Magnum rounds and features a 6-round capacity. It's the most powerful non-explosive weapon available, and the damage is increased 4x times when Kevin or Alyssa use their "pot-shot" ability. Whilst it can be found in the first game, it is far more common in File #2. Like the normal Revolver, a speedloader can be found for the Magnum Revolver that drastically reduces the reload time, but like the Handgun Magazine, the speedloader must be reloaded again before use.

IMI Desert Eagle Mark XIX

The Desert Eagle Mark XIX, also known as the "Magnum Handgun", is another type of magnum found in the game, only in the "Below Freezing Point" chapter as Yoko in the first game, but like the Magnum Revolver, is far more common in File #2. It carries 7 rounds per magazine and uses "Magnum rounds", which can be loaded into a magazine which can be used to reduce reloading time. It does slightly less damage than the S&W Model 29, which is a .44 Magnum. However, it can fires faster than the Magnum Revolver.

Franchi SPAS-12

The SPAS-12 is the resident shotgun in both games, and is seen being used by Raccoon City Police Officers (most notably, Officer Raymond Douglas in the "Outbreak" scenario). It has a capacity of seven 12 gauge shells. For a shotgun, it has appalling damage drop-off at long range, which is often typical in most video games, only showing the shotgun as a close range damage weapon. The SPAS-12 has a wide spread pattern in-game, and is often capable of hitting multiple targets.

Remington 870

The Remington 870 is featured in-game as the "Shotgun E", a weaker shotgun found in most scenarios in File #2. The difference between this shotgun and the SPAS-12 besides damage is the fact that the weapon does more damage over range. It does 40% damage at long range, far better than the SPAS-12's 10%. Though a shot does not spread widely, a closed-range blast is able to push off any medium-size enemies (which rarely happens with the SPAS-12), making it extremely useful in siege combat.

J.P. Sauer S202

The J.P. Sauer S202 appears as "Hunting Rifle" and is found exclusively in the "Wild Things" scenario in File #2, credited as firing .458 rounds (.458 Winchester Magnum) and only holds 2 rounds. It does not feature a scope and instead is fired from the hip, like the shotguns. After each shot, the character using it operates the bolt. Ammunition is very scarce, but it can take down the Scenario Boss (either a zombie elephant or male lion, depending on what you do during the scenario) with just a few shots.

Heckler & Koch MP5A2

The Heckler & Koch MP5A2, called the "Sub-Machine Gun", is found in "The Hive" chapter when playing as either Kevin or Cindy in the first game, and can be found by any character in File #2's "Desperate Times" scenario. It fires 9x19mm "Handgun Ammo" from 30-round magazines, and a magazine can be found for it on various difficulties. It has one of the longest reload times in the game if manually reloaded. It's fitted with a fixed stock and Surefire 628 dedicated forend weaponlight, which is never used in-game and is always held at the hip. It does much less damage than the Beretta despite using the same round. Its item description incorrectly refers to this weapon as a handgun.

Assault Rifles

Colt Model 727

The Colt Model 727, simply called "Assault Rifle", is found in the "Decisions, Decisions" Chapter. It fires 5.56x45mm rounds from 30-round magazines and unlike other weapons, the only ammunition available is in the form of "Assault Rifle Magazines". It fires rapidly but seems to do the same damage as the Beretta, despite using a full size rifle round. Like the MP5A2, it is held at the hip.

In some cutscenes, soldiers can be seen with Model 727 carbines with attached M203 Grenade Launchers.

The M79, called the "Grenade Launcher," (followed with the type of round loaded) is a single shot, breach-loading grenade launcher seen in the game. It fires three different types of the rounds: Burst Rounds, Flame Rounds, and fictional Acid Rounds. It is a commonly found weapon in both games.

M136 AT4

The AT4 is featured in the game as "Rocket Launcher". Like the real life version, it fires only a single shot before being disposed of. The weapon is only seen in the chapter "Decisions, Decisions" in the first game. In File #2, the weapon can be found in the "End Of The Road" scenario. It takes a while to aim the weapon, as the character crouches just before firing it.

Other Weapons

Nail Gun

While not a weapon per se, the weapon is treated like a very weak handgun and is only found in the "Outbreak" scenario in the first game. It only carries 20 nails and there is no reload for it. Kevin and Alyssa can use their "Pot-Shot" ability to increase the damage on a per shot basis.

Crosman 2240 Air Pistol

This weapon is a specialty weapon referred to as the "Ampoule Shooter" that fires a dart full of "Daylight" serum, a possible cure for the T-Virus and G-Virus. It fires only a single shot, but can be used to kill the Thanatos Tyrant instantly. In File #2, George carries this as an extra item, renamed the "Capsule Shooter". It can be used to shoot teammates with recovery medicine and can be equipped with anti-virus pills to inflict damage to zombies.

Heckler & Koch USP Tactical

Nikolai from Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is seen using a Heckler & Koch USP Tactical equipped with a silencer and laser sight in the "Decisions, Decisions" scenario to assassinate Greg Mueller, a rogue Umbrella virologist who worked on the Thanatos. This gun cannot be obtained by players.

Heckler & Koch MP5A3

The Heckler & Koch MP5A3 is seen in the opening cutscene based around the Birkin Incident that was shown in Resident Evil 2 prior to the Raccoon City outbreak, used by the Umbrella Security Service (U.S.S.). It features the same Surefire 628 dedicated forend weaponlight as the A2, but also features a Aimpoint CompM2 red-dot sight and a flash hider. In certain scenes, it changes to a normal MP5A3 without the sight and then changes back in a continuity error. Some UBCS operatives are seen using MP5A3s.

Heckler & Koch PSG-1

The Heckler & Koch PSG-1 is seen used by Nikolai as he fires a capsule at the Thanatos in an attempt to drain its blood. In File #2, the rifle appears again used by Arnold, a commander of the UBCS, seen sniping zombies on the street below and accidentally wounding the character Linda with a leg shot. He also is able to shoot a zombie in the head, holding the gun one handed(!), that was standing behind an Umbrella executive.

The Browning M2HB is only seen in cutscenes, the first in the ending cut scenes of the "Outbreak" stage and again in the ending with Mark and David.

FIM-92A Stinger

The FIM-92A Stinger is used by the Umbrella executive to try and shoot down the fleeing Chinook helicopter with the Renegade Umbrella Operative carrying the B.O.W. Nyx. It misses the helicopter but causes the container that holds Nyx to break free and fall on a bridge with a platoon of UBCS operatives standing near it.
