Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes (2014)

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a short precursor game to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One in 2014, with a release for Windows PC on Steam later the same year. Following on from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Big Boss/Snake must infiltrate a top-secret detention facility, Camp Omega, in order to rescue two high-value prisoners.

For reasons which are not entirely clear, the game drops the series' prior tendency to use real weapons with generally correct names, instead mostly featuring fictional hybrid weapons based closely on real ones from the era.

"WU Silent Pistol"

The "WU Silent Pistol" [Windurger No.2 Silent Pistol] is a suppressed tranquilizer gun. It holds 8 rounds in the the magazine and is single shot only, the slide must must be manually worked to chamber a new round. As in found in The Phantom Pain, without its permanent suppressor it heavily resembles the AMC Auto Mag Pistol with the addition of a polymer frame.

The gun is the equivalent of the M9 from MGS2, Mk.22 Mod 0 featured in MGS3, Portable Ops & Peace Walker, and the Ruger Mk. II from MGS4.

"AM D114 Pistol"

The "AM D114 Pistol" [Arms Material Delta-114 Combat Pistol] is the game's substitute for the Colt M1911A1, that has been featured throughout the MGS series, starting with 2004's Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Aesthetically, it appears to be inspired by the CZ 75, Browning Hi-Power, and Smith & Wesson Model 39 - while it ultimately ends up looking a lot like a FÉG Model 45 ACK/GKK. The gun is chambered in .45 ACP, sports the slide inside the frame design of the CZ 75 and its derivatives, has BO-MAR style target sights, and a checkered front strap.

The "Uragan-5 Pistol" [BTS Instrument Design Bureau Uragan-5 Pistol] is a 5-round revolver that uses both lethal and non-lethal shotgun rounds. It utilizes the low bore six-o-clock chamber design of Mateba revolvers, with the hexagonal cylinder design of the Chiappa Rhino series, and a break-action design similar to the MP-412 REX.

While there have been shotguns and grenade launchers that shoot non-lethal shells in MGS, there yet has been a dedicated weapon for knock-out rounds like URAGAN-5. Enemy chatter during the main game indicated that the URAGAN-5 Pistol was intended to be distributed among the personnel at the time of the mission, although the specifics of the weapon were largely kept confidential by the brass to the Marine tasked with delivering the weapon barring it having knock out rounds. Its name suggests that it is Soviet in origin.

Submachine Guns


The "Sz.-336 SMG" [Sodomka zbrojovka Type 336 Submachine Gun] substitutes for the Sa. Vz.61 Skorpion featured in MGS3 and MGSPW. Like most weapons in the game, it appears to be made up of parts from various real firearms, such as a hybrid receiver of the Sa 23 SMG and Uzi, the Uzi's iron sights and the wire-stock and bolt of a Skorpion. The overall shape and design of the submachine gun also resembles the Alka Model 93, which happens to have parts derived from the Skorpion and the MAC 10 & 11.

Ingame it fires 9mm rounds. Nearly all of the XOF soldiers are seen wielding it with underbarrel flashlights. A suppressed Sz.-336 can be found in the back of a truck.

"S1000 Shotgun"

The "S1000 Shotgun" [Broughton Model 1000 Series Shotgun] is a fictional weapon in Ground Zeroes, although it bears some resemblance to various real world shotguns, mainly modeled after the Remington 870 with an extended forend resembling that of the Heckler & Koch FABARM FP6.

The weapon substitutes for Ithaca 37 featured in MGS3, PO & PW.

Mare's Leg lever-action rifle

During the opening cutscene of Ground Zeroes mission - when Skullface and XOF unit have boarded a helicopter and are getting rid of the patches - a brief glimpse of the front end of Skullface's Mare's Leg can be seen.

In one of FOX engine demonstrations, a gun wall with handful of MGSV weapons was shown and among them is a shortened lever-action rifle with a case-hardened steel receiver.

When infiltrating the boiler room of the admin building (where Paz is located), some of guards talk about Skullface, saying "that piece he is carrying is a sawed-off old lever-action" - confirming that Skullface is the one who wields it.

The SAR-80 style "AM-69" carried by guards at the Cuban prison camp is part of a fictional series of rifles similar to the AR-15 series, which includes the "MRS-4" (AR-15 Carbine). They utilize features of the FN FAL such as the long front hand guard, Daewoo K2, and the SAR-80 to which they most closely resemble. The AM-69AAS variant mounts a "DGL-103“ break-open grenade launcher to a heat shield handguard and a variable-zoom scope to a riser just in front of the rear sight, making it resemble an M16A2 carrying handle with top rail mount.

At least one XOF soldier carries a standard AM-69 with a variable-zoom scope mounted to a riser, similar to the AAS variant. Unlike the AAS, it lacks the underbarrel grenade launcher and heat shield. Note the standard three-vent hole FAL-style handguard instead.

"AM MRS-4"

Snake's main issued rifle is a FAL-style rifle known as the "MRS-4" [Arms Material Multi-purpose Rifle System model 4.] It is part of the fictional "Arms Material" rifle series in the game, and draws design influences from the FN FAL, the FN FNC, the SR 88, the Daewoo K2, and the Gwinn Firearms Bushmaster Rifle, standing in for a AR-15-style carbine or FN FNC. It features a FN Para style stock, FAL-style side charging handle, cylindrical forearm with attached tactical torch, removable suppressor, and utilizes STANAG 5.56x45mm magazines.

It is revealed in The Phantom Pain that the MRS-4 is a highly modular weapon, making the weapon comparable to MGS4's M4 Custom and perhaps Peace Walker's Colt M653 Carbine. Unmodified MRS-4 carbines are seen being used by MSF to defend Mother Base from XOF's surprise attack.

"Broughton M-2000D"

The "M2000-D" [Broughton Model 2000 Sniper Rifle, Detachable-Magazine] is the in-game sniper rifle, it uses 7.62mm rounds and has a variable zoom scope. It is inspired by "early Cold-War Sniper Rifles" like the Winchester Model 70 and Remington Model 700.

The gun substitutes for Remington 700 featured in Peace Walker.

Grenade Launchers


A break-action , single-shot 40mm grenade launcher based on the HK79 mounted under the barrel of the AM-69AAS.

Rocket Launchers

"FB R-Launcher"

The "FB R-Launcher" [Falkenberg Multi-Role Rocket Lancher] is a re-loadable recoilless rifle. While its explosive damage is extremely powerful, the re-load time is the slowest of any of the weapons in the game. In overall design and appearance it resembles the Carl Gustav M4, having several features present on the M4 but not the M3.

Indeed, it most likely substitutes for the Carl Gustav M2 featured in Peace Walker. Enemy chatter during the "Eliminate the Renegade Threat" Side Op implied that the weapon was a new addition to the Marine Corps attachment at the base, at least at the time of the mission.

A fictional rocket propelled grenade launcher which appears to have been designed by imagining an intermediate step between the Panzerschreck and Panzerfaust 3. Used by at least two XOF soldiers in the attack on Mother Base; it is unobtainable to the player. This weapon would later be available to the player in the follow-up, The Phantom Pain.

Machine Guns

"HMG-3 Wingate"

The "HMG-3 Wingate" is a stationary HMG mounted on the XOF APE T-41LV Jeeps that only appear in the opening montage sequence. Its appearance is similar to that of the Browning M2. It is unusable by the player.

M61 Vulcan

Four M61 Vulcans in M167 VADS installations can be found inside Camp Omega; they can be used by Big Boss, or destroyed using C4: doing so will unlock new landing zones for the support helicopter. The side-op "Destroy The Anti-Air Emplacements" tasks Big Boss with destroying at least three of them to prepare for a US military attack on the base.

Shipunov 2A42

A Shipunov 2A42 chaingun is mounted on the attack helicopter which can be called in to extract prisoners or knocked-out Marines; the Fulton System apparently unavailable to Big Boss since Peace Walker due to the helicopter's ability to fly beneath the naval base's radar, which would detect the Fulton balloons and the aircraft used to snatch them. This helicopter, callsign "Morpho," is a fictional modification of the Mi-28 Havoc called an HP-48 "Krokodil", with a deeper fuselage containing a transport compartment accessible via folding side doors like the Mil Mi-24 "Hind". Coincidentally, "Krokodil" or "Крокодил" is one of the nicknames for the Mi-24 "Hind" gunship in which the helicopter in the game is based on, which is translated literally as "crocodile" in Russian.

M67 hand grenade

M67 hand grenade - called "Hand Grenade" [Type 58 Hand Grenade] in-game - is obtainable to player. They're also seen as weapon icons.

Grenades can be found in armories, storage shelves and watch towers all-around Camp Omega. They are also used by the enemy in certain situations.

M93-T Smoke/Flare Grenade

An icon for Flare Grenades when players bring up Snake's weapon HUD menu. They could be used to summon the MSF gunship as Big Boss's extraction method when Big Boss frees Chico and Paz. The outline and nature of the grenade suggests that it is the M93-T Smoke/Flare Grenade.

M18 Smoke Grenades

M18 Smoke Grenades are carried by MSF soldiers on their flak jackets in the final cutscene.

M18A1 Claymore

M18A1 Claymore - called "M21 D-Mine" [M21 Directional Anti-Personnel Mine Stilett] in-game with mild aesthetic alterations - is obtainable to the player.

They located near the Camp Omega section of the base, specifically near the cliffs to the sea. The player can disarm them and collect them like in prior Metal Gear games. It is strongly implied that the mines were placed there to ensure that the detained prisoners don't escape and presumably also ensure any intruders who uncover what is going on cannot escape via the cliffs. In addition, both Chico's diary and the briefings for the prison facility that serve as backstory mention that the area near land possesses an un-navigable maze of mines from both the Cubans and the Americans acting as deterrent from escape or breakins, although it isn't made clear if they were M21 Directional Anti-Personnel Mine Stiletts.
