Aliens: Colonial Marines (2013)

Aliens: Colonial Marines is a first-person shooter video game based on the popular Aliens movie. The game was under development by Gearbox Software since 2006, and subject to repeated delays with the initial release date having been early in 2010. After seven years in development, it was finally released on February 12th 2013 for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. SPOILERS.jpg WARNING! THIS PAGE CONTAINS SPOILERS!

The following weapons appear in the video game Aliens: Colonial Marines:

Overview

Aliens: Colonial Marines uses an unusual system in which the player character can carry every weapon they have and assign them to four quick-selection slots; two for main weapons, one for a pistol, and one for a grenade. Weapons are unlocked using an experience point system, while special "legendary" weapons can be found in the game world. Certain weapons like the flamethrower and Smartgun cannot be put in the inventory and can only be used as long as the player does not switch to another weapon, which will discard them.

In addition, experience points can be used to earn accessories that can be unlocked with unlock points gained by levelling up or completing challenges. These include scopes, optics and underbarrel accessories.

M1911A1

An M1911A1 referred to as the "Armat M4A3 Service pistol" is the default sidearm, and is available from the start. It can use a number of different attachments, such as a suppressor (which somehow increases accuracy) and a laser sight.

Heckler & Koch VP70

The Heckler & Koch VP70 appears in the singleplayer as the "W-Y 88 MOD4 Combat Pistol," with the legendary version called "Gorman's Pistol." It holds 18 rounds and possesses extremely light recoil and a higher rate of fire than the M1911, but lower damage. Gorman's Pistol is a lighter shade of green and seems to deliver more damage than the bog standard pistol.

Sawn Off Double Barrel Shotgun

An exclusive weapon to the Extermination Edition of Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Ithaca 37 "Stakeout"

The Ithaca 37 "Stakeout" appears in-game as the "Pump-Action Shotgun" or as the "Armat M37A22 in two forms. The normal default shotgun appears to be blued with a synthetic forearm and holds 8 rounds. A Legendary version which features a parkerized finish and a wooden forearm, 6 rounds and more power with each shot is called Hicks' Shotgun, a homage to Hicks from the Aliens Film. Hicks' shotgun features the words "NO FATE" painted on top of the receiver in reference to Michael Biehn's other famous role as Kyle Reese in Terminator, and acid burn marks on the muzzle which it acquired in the movie.

The default shotgun can have a number of attachments over its legendary cousin, these include a barrel choke tube which decreases Spread, custom loading gate which reduces the reload speed, Flechette rounds which somehow decrease shot spread further, tightening the shot group, Expanding shot rounds which increase the damage but decreases the rate of fire and a Alloy Iron sight which decreases the weapons weight by 3 ounces and speeds up ADS time while also allowing for faster movement while in ADS.

Benelli M4 Super 90

The Benelli M4 Super 90 appears in Aliens: Colonial Marines as the W-Y MK221 Tactical Shotgun with an 8 round magazine. Its default form lacks a stock but can later be upgraded with one as an attachment. It also features attachments in the form of an underslung launcher taken from the Pulse Rifle that fires either Incendiary Shells, fragmentation grenades or electromagnetic shotgun slugs, the latter of which acts as an oversized stun gun.

M39 Sub-Machine Gun

The M39 Sub-Machine gun appears as a smaller, cut-down version of the M41A Pulse Rifle, lacking the carrying handle and underslung grenade launcher. It carries 48 rounds by default but can be extended to 72 with the use of a magazine attachment which also inversely slows down the weapons reload speed.

M41A Mark 2 Pulse Rifle

As in the movie, as well as in the Aliens versus Predator video games, an M41A Pulse Rifle variant is the standard automatic weapon of the Colonial Marines, in this case an updated Mark 2 variant. Comes equipped with 10mm explosive tipped, caseless, light armor piercing rounds with a 30mm pump action grenade launcher. Also comes standard with a ammo counter on the left hand side of the rifle. The Mark 2 is slightly smaller overall than the original version seen in the film, and features a 40 round magazine capacity (unlike the movie version's 100-round capacity), likely for balance reasons. The magazine capacity can be increased to 60 with a magazine attachment.

It exists within the game as three variants. Aside from the standard issue Mark 2, pre-ordering the collector's edition of the game gives players access to "Ripley's Flamethrower", which is actually a Pulse Rifle and a Flamethrower taped together, as used by Sigourney Weaver in the film. Another legendary weapon called "Hudson's Pulse Rifle" is also available once found in-game. Both Ripley's Flamethrower and Hudson's Pulse Rifle are based on the original M41A from the film, and have the full 100 round magazine from the movie (albeit downloaded to 95 rounds in-game). Hudson's Pulse Rifle is also limited to burst fire only (likely a reference to the "short, controlled bursts" scene in Aliens where Hudson is dragged away).

The Mark 2 has several modular and customization options. These options include the aforementioned extended magazine, laser and reflex sights, an increased fire rate, a sound suppressor and even the option to swap out the underslung grenade launcher for a fire-bomb launcher or a pump-action 12 gauge shotgun.

Unknown Bullpup Assault Rifle

Called the W-Y NSG 23 Assault Rifle in-game, used by Weyland Yutani Commando's. Apparently is a 7.62mm Burst fire assault rifle that holds a 30 round magazine capacity. It can utilize an underbarrel flamethrower, a recoil absorbing pad on the buttstock and a red dot sight.

Unknown Bullpup Battle Rifle

Called the Armat M4RA Battle Rifle, it has a bullpup frame and it holds a 15 round magazine and functions as the games sniper rifle or marksman rifle, give the close quarters of the game.

M56 Smartgun

The M56 Smartgun appears in-game as O'Neal's standard issue weapon. It is also usable by the player on occasion, although it cannot be retained in the player's inventory, nor can it be reloaded, and the weapon is simply discarded when empty. An M56 is also seen attached to a P-5000 Power Loader's arm in the E3 walkthrough.

Another sketch shows off the detailing of the weapon.

M240 Flamethrower

The M240 Flamethrower, like the M56 Smartgun, can be used by the player but cannot be retained in their inventory and must be discarded once empty. It is devastating against Aliens but less effective against armoured human enemies.

An M240 also forms part of the legendary Ripley's Flamethrower weapon available with the Collector's Edition of the game, although unlike the Pulse Rifle component of the weapon it cannot be reloaded and become useless once empty (the Pulse Rifle component can still be used). An M240 was also seen on the left arm of the Powerloader in the E3 walkthrough.
