The Scarlet Claw is an American 1944 detective movie, directed by Roy William Neill and starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. This is the eighth installment to the series of fourteen Sherlock Holmes films starring Rathbone and Bruce. The plot isn't adapted from any Arthur Conan Doyle work but it bears resemblance to The Hound of the Baskervilles. During their visit to Quebec in Canada, Holmes and Watson are involved in the case of the legendary monster of La Mort Rouge (literally "the red death") village. The locals are convinced that this is the monster who killed Lady Penrose, but Holmes uncovers the man behind the crime.
The following weapons were used in the film The Scarlet Claw:
Revolvers
Colt Detective Special
Sherlock Holmes' (Basil Rathbone) revolver is a Colt Detective Special.

Holmes holds his revolver in the scene on the marshes around the La Mort Rouge village.
Holmes fires at "the monster".
Holmes readies his revolver in the scene in abandoned De La Porte hotel where Ramson hides.
The shadow of the revolver reveals the shape of the front sight and ejector rod.
Holmes holds his Colt in same scene.

Another view of the scene.
The grip of Holmes' revolver is seen on a lobby card.

Colt Police Positive
Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) carries a Colt Police Positive revolver. Same looking revolvers are seen in hands of Lord Penrose (Paul Cavanagh) and of a constable in the final scene.
Colt Police Positive with 4" Barrel - .38 Special
Watson holds his Colt in the scene in De La Porte hotel. Next to him police Sergeant Thompson (
David Clyde) fires a large frame Colt at escaping Tanner (Ramson in disguise).
Lord Penrose holds a revolver when he find Holmes who sneaked into his house.
Watson holds his revolver when he appears in Ramson's hideout.

Constable's revolver is seen at the background left on a promotional image.
Colt Official Police
Police Sergeant Thompson's (David Clyde) sidearm is a large frame Colt, most likely a Colt Official Police. It is a military issued version, with lanyard ring.

Thompson carries his revolver in holster.

Iver Johnson Bulldog
Alistair Ramson (Gerald Hamer) carries an Iver Johnson Bulldog in several scenes. The revolver appears to be the same Model 1900 with pearl grips that was seen in several other movies of the series.

Ramson fires at Holmes and then at coming to the rescue Watson.
Rifles
Winchester Model 1894
During the final hunt for Ramson two of La Mort Rouge villagers carry Winchester Model 1894 rifles. A Winchester M1894 is also seen in Sgt. Thompson's gun rack.

A villager with a Winchester M1894. The scene is mirrored, as the loading port of the Winchester is seen on its left side, instead of right.
A man at the foreground holds a Winchester. The saddle ring can be seen.
The barrel of the Winchester is seen at the right.
Same man with a Winchester M1894 is seen (at the background right) on a promotional image.
Sporterized Mauser Rifle
Bolt action hunting/sporting rilfes are seen in several scenes, but they all appear to be the same prop, reused several times. The rifle is most likely a sporterized military Mauser, judging by the details of the stock.
For comparison: German-style Mauser 98 Sporter Model K - 7.92x57mm Mauser. Unlike this purpose-built sporter, the screen gun has the stock more similar to military Mausers, such as
Karabiner 98k.
A bolt action rifle is seen in the gun rack.
Judge Brisson raises his rifle at Holmes and Watson.
Another view of Brisson's rifle.
The innkeeper Emile Journet (
Arthur Hohl) holds a rifle when he hides from Ramson.
A man in a deerstalker hat holds a rifle during the hunt for Ramson.
A man in a plaid jacket holds a bolt action rifle (at the background left) on a promotional image. This is a continuity error, as in the movie this man carries a Winchester pump action shotgun (see below).
Shotguns
Winchester Model 1897 or Model 1912
Winchester pump action shotguns are seen in Sgt. Thompson's gun rack and in hands of villagers. There are two guns, one with long hunting barrel and another in Riot configuration. Receivers of these shotguns are seen only partially, so it's hard to determine if these are Model 1897 or Model 1912 but the Riot gun bears more resemblance with Model 1897.
For comparison: Winchester Model 1897 Field shotgun - 12 gauge
For comparison: Winchester Model 1897 Riot Gun - 12 gauge
For comparison: Winchester Model 1912 - 12 gauge
For comparison: Winchester Model 1912 Riot Gun - 12 gauge
A long-barreled Winchester pump action shotgun is seen in the gun rack.
Same shotgun is seen in another scene.
