The Avengers is the 2012 superhero film based on the Marvel comic book series. Like the comic book, the film brings together four of Marvel's greatest superheroes to fight a global threat. The film was directed by Joss Whedon, the creator of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly television series, and the cast includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, and Samuel L. Jackson, who were first introduced in the films Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger. The film, which was also released under the title Avengers Assemble, is the culmination of "Phase One" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and would go on to become the highest worldwide-grossing film of all time not directed by James Cameron until it was surpassed in 2015 by Jurassic World. Three more Avengers films would follow including 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron and 2018's Avengers: Infinity War.
