The first season tells 9 stories (originally planned 10, but due to COVID-19 pandemic one of them was postponed) from alternate universes that arose after the events of Loki. Episode 1 of the series finds Peggy Carter (voice of Hayley Atwell) taking the super serum instead of Steve Rogers and Episode 2 poses the question what if T'Challa became Star-Lord, among other alternate scenarios. Despite the format of the anthologies, all the episodes of Season 1 are linked by a coherent plot. Season 1 of What If...? premiered on Disney+ on August 11, 2021.

Captain Carter and Bucky Barnes use Colt M1911A1 pistols in "What If... Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?" (S1E01).

Captain Carter and the Howlin' Commandos burst into Red Skull hideout while armed with their M1911A1 pistols in "What If... Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?" (S1E01). This scene is a homage to a similar moment from the film Captain America: The First Avenger.

Luger P08

A HYDRA assassin named Heinz Kruger armed with a Luger P08 pistol during a sabotage at SSR Brooklyn Facility in "What If... Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?" (S1E01). Now he chooses other targets and kills Chester Phillips and wounds Steve, instead of killing Abraham Erskine, as in the original film.

Luger P08 - 9x19mm Parabellum

In "What If... Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?" (S1E01), Kruger shoots Colonel Phillips, killing him. Notably that here he uses a Luger instead of Walther P38 as in the original film.

Later in the episode, Kruger fires his Luger P08 pistol at Steve, who rushed at him.

In the episode, Heinz Kruger holds his Luger P08, having stolen one capsule containing the Super Soldier serum. The assassin was already heading for the exit, but Peggy blocked his way.

Mauser C96

In "What If... Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?" (S1E01), Johann Schmidt, aka "The Red Skull", uses a Mauser C96 pistol to eliminate a German officer.

Walther PPK

As in the original film, Peggy Carter is armed with a Walther PPK pistol in "What If... Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?" (S1E01). She uses it to kill Kruger and after that drops the gun to the floor while helping the injured Steve.

The HYDRA soldiers use a MP40 submachine guns as their main weapon throughout "What If... Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?" (S1E01). A small squad storming a Castle Rock Tower in Norway uses MP40.

Grenades & Explosives

Kruger's Bomb

As in the original film, Heinz Kruger, a HYDRA top assassin, uses a detonator disguised as a lighter to activate the bomb, and then sabotages in "What If... Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?" (S1E01). But unlike the original movie, Kruger placed the bomb in a rectangular metal case next to the control panels, while in the film the bomb itself was not visible, and the explosion took place in the observation room.

Panzerkampfwagen VI "Tiger"

The HYDRA uses a variety of heavy Tiger tanks throughout "What If... Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?" (S1E01). First, one tank is covered by a detachment of infantry storming Castle Rock Tower where the Tesseract is hidden. A few heavy Tiger tanks attacks Captain Carter and Howling Commandos in "What If... Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?" (S1E01)., but HYDRA Stomper destroys it. Carter also destroys one, damaging the tracks.
