The Ruger 10/22 is a very popular sporting weapon, named based on its .22 caliber and 10 round magazine capacity (however it can take a variety of high capacity aftermarket magazines). It is the undisputed king of .22LR semiautomatic rifles in the United States, due, mostly to it's prevalence and affordable price.  Remington, Winchester and other manufacturers have built and marketed .22LR semiautomatic guns, the Ruger has been sold in greater numbers than all of it's competitors.  The gun is very popular in customization and many after market parts can be bought to customize the rifle. Heavily customized models have been used in many marksmanship competitions. The Ruger 10/22 is currently available in .22 Long Rifle, formerly available in .22 Magnum and .17 HMR. (10/22 magnum and 10/17) but no longer. Rimfire magnum models were discontinued in 2006 due to disappointing sales.
