The Golden Compass is a 2007 fantasy adventure film directed by Chris Weitz. It is an adaptation of the fantasy novel Northern Lights by Philip Pullman. The story is set in an alternate Earth where magic exists and every person is accompanied by a dæmon, a manifestation of their inner spirit represented by an intelligent animal. Orphan Lyra Belacqua embarks on a journey to the Arctic to search for her kidnapped friends while being pursued by agents of the Magisterium, a powerful religious order. Along the way, Lyra uncovers a conspiracy that has the potential to change the world.

This is the first screen adaptation of the His Dark Materials book series. A television series adaptation was also produced and premiered in the UK on BBC and in the US on HBO in 2019.
