In December 2025, months after the end of the events of Sword Art Online (Season 1), and Kazuto Kirigaya (Username: Kirito) is living peacefully back in the real world. However, he is recruited by Seijirou Kikuoka of the Ministry of Internal Affairs' Virtual Division to investigate in a series of killings in the Virtual Reality MMORPG game Gun Gale Online. A player calling himself "Death Gun" is suspected of causing the deaths of two GGO players via shooting their avatars in the game, somehow coincidentally causing their real bodies to suffer an acute heart attack.
Gun Gale Online is a sci-fi, gun-based VRMMORPG set on a post-apocalyptic Earth, featuring both real firearms as well as sci-fi blaster-style weapons called optical guns which fire light-based ammo; the former are intended for Player vs. Player combat, while the latter are generally for hunting NPC monsters. The main even in the story is a PvP battle royale style tournament called the Bullet of Bullets.
Sword Art Online II has multiple story arcs and settings within the season, featuring the Phantom Bullet, Calibur, and Mother's Rosario story arcs, just as the first season featured the Aincrad and Fairy Dance story arcs, and Extra Edition bonus episode. As Phantom Bullet is the only arc to feature firearms, it's the only arc to be featured on this page. Also, as the story is set in a video game, all of the guns in the show appear in that context, with the exception two; one of those two is an airsoft replica.
Warning: Some descriptions and images are potential spoilers for the series, read at your own risk.
The following weapons were used in the anime series Sword Art Online II:
Pistols
Norinco Type 54
A player named "Death Gun" uses a Norinco Type 54 "Black Star" as his sidearm, which he uses to supposedly murder players in Gun Gale Online. A Type 54 was also used by a bank robber who was disarmed and killed with it by Shino Asada (Username: "Sinon") five years before the main story.
FN Five-seveN
Kirito uses an FN Five-seveN as his sidearm accompanying his Kagemitsu G4 photon sword. Sinon's HUD symbol for her sidearm, which is a Glock 18C, is occasionally misrepresented as a Five-seveN.
Glock 18C
Sinon uses a Glock 18C with a 33-round magazine as her secondary weapon, replacing her original source incarnation's H&K MP7. Oddly, her HUD shows an FN Five-seveN instead until it is corrected in episode 5.
Colt M1911A1
A sign for a gambling mini-game in Gun Gale Online has an M1911A1 on it. Endou, a school bully, later tries to use an airsoft M1911A1 to extort money from Shino.
Beretta 92FS
A player is seen firing a Beretta 92FS at the weapon market's firing range.
Unknown Pistol
Ginrou is seen dual-wielding a pair of unknown pistols in the Gun Gale Online introductory sequence.
Revolvers
Colt Python
A Colt Python was the first weapon used by Sinon in GGO.
Smith & Wesson Schofield
The mascot for the Untouchable! mini-game wields a Smith & Wesson Schofield as his weapon.
Single Action Army
In an explanation of the Bullet of Bullets Tournament, avatars are seen in a Western face-off drawing Single Action Armys.
Submachine Guns
IMI Uzi
Miso wields a Uzi as his main weapon.
Heckler & Koch MP5N
A player during the BOB tournament is seen using a H&K MP5N with a fixed stock.
Heckler & Koch MP5SD3
A number of players are seen with MP5SDs with collapsible stocks in the BoB waiting room.
Heckler & Koch MP5K
A player with a H&K MP5K can be seen the first moment Kirito enters Gun Gale Online.
Heckler & Koch UMP45
Ginrou uses a H&K UMP as his main weapon.
Heckler & Koch MP7
A player on a chat has picture of an avatar with a H&K MP7 on it.
MAC-10
A GGO player in the BOB tournament is seen firing a MAC-10 as his main weapon.
CZ vz. 61 Skorpion
A Gun Gale Online player is armed with a CZ vz. 61 Skorpion as his main weapon in the introduction sequence for the game.
Calico M900
A Calico M900 in the long barreled, semi automatic carbine configuration without the M951 style foregrip is wielded by Yamikaze. Sinon refers the Calico as an "ultra-lightweight machinegun, the Calico M900A".
Unknown SMG
A player participating in the Bullet of Bullets preliminary matches is seen with an SMG or some sort slung over his shoulder, likely WWII-era or earlier.
Assault Rifles
FAMAS G2
Player Usujio Tarako is seen using a FAMAS G2 as his main weapon.
AK-74
A number of players watching the BoB tournament are seen with AK-74s.
FN SCAR
A BoB player killed by Death Gun was using a SCAR rifle, caliber unknown due to the angle. These players were killed by Death Gun's L115, not the Type 54 that supposedly murders people in the real world; they're simply "dead" in a traditional video game sense.
Howa Type 89
Although Kyouji Shinkawa is never actually seen with his own main weapon in the show itself, he is seen with a Howa Type 89 on the bluray box cover art. In the novels, Kirito describes him as carrying a "somewhat large machine gun" slung over his shoulder; given Kirito's (lack of) expertise with firearms, this is an appropriate description for a full-size assault rifle like the Type 89.
Steyr AUG A1
A player is seen firing a Steyr AUG A1 in the GGO firing range.
M4A1 Carbine
The M4A1 can be seen used by Arashi as his main weapon; in the source material he was referred to as "the one with the M4". M4 images are also seen in the GGO Market.
Norinco Model 311
Kakouton attacks Kirito and Sinon with a Norinco Model 311; he loads it with a Beta-C magazine when it runs empty.
Mk. 18 Mod 0
A Mk. 18 Mod 0 is seen in an introduction sequence of Gun Gale Online.
Heckler & Koch G36
A H&K G36 with the built-in 3x scope carry handle is seen when Kirito first enters GGO. The specific variant is unknown as the front end isn't seen.
Bushmaster ACR
A player is seen wielding a Bushmaster ACR in the GGO firing range.
SIG SG 550
Dyne wields a SIG SG 550 as his main weapon.
FN F2000
XeXeeD is seen with an FN F2000 paired with the GL-1 under barrel grenade launcher and standard low zoom optical sight, said to be a rare and very good weapon in GGO.
Battle Rifles
M1A SOCOM 16
A M1A SOCOM 16 is seen in an introduction sequence of Gun Gale Online, used by Jin as his main weapon.
Mk 14 Mod 0
Musketeer X wields a scoped Mk 14 Enhanced Battle Rifle as her primary weapon. Kirito later picks it up and uses it to provide cover fire for a downed Sinon.
Heckler & Koch G3A3
Uemaru wields a H&K G3A3 as his main weapon.
Machine Guns
FN Minimi
An enemy squad that Sinon engages has a player with a FN Minimi. Its firepower is a plot point and the gun is called by name frequently.
M60E4
A player is seen with a M60E4 in the Bullet of Bullets Qualifier Room.
Browning Automatic Rifle
A player is seen with a Browning Automatic Rifle in the Bullet of Bullets Qualifier Room.
Browning M1919
BOB Tournament competitor Shishigane appears to be wielding a Browning M1919. The source material states he uses only a Jatimatic SMG (to save weight for other equipment, such as armor), however this weapon is clearly not that.
Vickers Machine Gun
Lion King Richie takes up a defensive position on a mountain with a Vickers machine gun during the BOB tournament.
Hand Held M134 Minigun
The hired bodyguard Behemoth wields a Hand-held Minigun to counter a PvP squad Sinon is in.
Shotguns
Remington Model 870
A player is seen racking a Remington Model 870 in the Bullet of Bullets Qualifier Room.
AR-17
Pale Rider uses an Armalite AR-17 as his main weapon in the BoB Tournament.
Over And Under Shotgun
A player in the BoB waiting room has an over and under shotgun slung over his shoulder.
Sniper Rifles
PGM Hécate II
Sinon uses a PGM Hécate II as her main weapon. In-game, it is called "PGM Ultima Ratio Hécate II".
FR F2
The FR F2 makes its anime debut as Sinon's main sniper rifle before she acquired the Hécate II.
Accuracy International Arctic Warfare Magnum
"Death Gun"'s main weapon is a suppressed Accuracy International Arctic Warfare Magnum. According to Sinon, it's called the "Silent Assassin" in-game for its attached suppressor and very good performance. In the novels it's expressly and repeatedly referred to by its British military designation of L115A3.
Unknown Rifle
A modern scoped rifle is seen held by an entrant in the BoB tournament.
Grenades
Model 24 Stielhandgranate
A "modernized" Model 24 Stielhandgranate is used as a grenade by a player in the BOB tournament.
M18 smoke grenade
Kirito uses a M18 smoke grenade picked up from Musketeer X to cover his and Sinon's escape from "Death Gun".
Plasma Grenade
A futuristic high-explosive grenade is used by Sinon to end the BoB Tournament.
Weapon Market
The weapon shop in GGO shows only silhouettes and images of the weapons available for purchase, with a weapon materializing upon being purchased by a player. As such, there is a large quantity of firearms that only appear in image form, and these are grouped here for the sake of not flooding the rest of the page with duplicate images and single-image entries.
Weapons shown in the market are grouped by weapon type, with pistols, SMGs/PDWs, assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles, rocket launchers, and hand grenades being shown. For the generic silhouette images, each category has four individual models, reused enough times to fill up the board; the silhouette models shown are as follows: Pistols: Nambu Model 60, Beretta 92FS, Colt M1911A1, H&K USP SD. SMG/PDWs: H&K XM8 Compact Carbine, H&K MP5A3, H&K MP5N with tactical light forend and reflex sight, KRISS Vector. Assault Rifles: Colt R0635 (likely because AR-based), AK-47 with scope rail mount, H&K G36C, Colt M4A1 with Aimpoint sight. Shotguns: Maruzen CA870 CQB, two unknown shotguns, Benelli M4. Sniper Rifles: SVD, M40A5, unknown rifle, SMLE. Rocket Launchers: Carl Gustav M2, Mk 153 Mod 0 SMAW, M72 LAW, RPG-7. Hand Grenades: M26, M67, MK3, M116A1 training grenade.
