J. P. Sauer & Sohn GmbH, commonly referred as simply Sauer, is a German firearms manufacturing company founded in 1751. It is the oldest firearm manufacturer still active in Germany. Founded by Lorenz Sauer in Suhl, Thuringia, the company was trademarked as J. P. Sauer & Sohn in 1840 by Johann Paul Sauer and his sons.
After World War II, Suhl came under Soviet occupation, and later became a part of East Germany; Sauer's machinery were nationalized and merged with several other manufacturers to form VEB Ernst Thälmann.
