Dunkirk is a three-part 2004 UK documentary about the evacuation of surrounded British and French troops from Dunkirk in 1940. The documentation follows the story of normal soldiers and their commanding officers but also describes the situation around Winston Churchill. During the Second World War, the German Wehrmacht conducted the so-called Western Campaign, which lasted from May 10 to June 25, 1940. In the course of it, the northern French town of Dunkirk was also attacked and subsequently besieged, which at that time was the last port of evacuation for the British Expeditionary Force. Some 370,000 British and French troops were encircled by the Germans. But because the troops were ordered to hold their ground, this freed up valuable time to launch Operation Dynamo, the largest rescue operation in world history to date, in which nearly 340,000 men were brought to Britain by sea.
