The movie tells the events of the evacuation of surrounded British and French troops from Dunkirk in 1940 (Operation Dynamo). As her officer dies, Corporal "Tubby" Binns has the task of bringing his fighting men out of France and into Britain. Meanwhile, the British civilian population including Charles Foreman and John Holden crossing the English Channel by boat will be included in Operation Dynamo to rescue English and French soldiers on the beaches of Dunkirk from the advancing German Wehrmacht. Director Christopher Nolan would also tell the story of Operation Dynamo in the similarly named 2017 film.
