The G11 assault rifle was developed by Heckler & Koch in the 1980s as a potential replacement for West Germany's G3 battle rifles; it was also entered in the US military's Phase III Advanced Combat Rifle program in 1989-1990. It was mechanically sound but unsuccessful politically, finding itself being considered for adoption just as East and West Germany were reunified; around 1,000 units were produced, some finding their way into the hands of the Bundeswehr, but the weapon never entered full production and the project was cancelled in 1990. However, its futuristic design has led to it being featured frequently in video games and other media where an actual weapon is not required.
