Stephen Grant Doubles

Stephen Grant Sidelock Double Rifle - .500 Nitro Blackpowder

Stephen Grant was apprenticed to Kavanagh of Dublin before working with Charles Lancaster and Thomas Boss in London. Damascus pattern barrels with a blade front sight and two leaf rear sight on the solid rib. There is a sling eye mounted on the underside of the barrels. The top of the left barrel at the breech end is marked "STEPHEN GRANT" and "67A ST JAMES STREET LONDON" on the right. Crown over "V" and "GP" proofs on the barrel flats and two "crown/V" proofs on the water table. The frame, side locks, break lever, trigger guard and forearm hardware are nicely engraved with fine floral scroll designs and each lock plate is marked "STEPHEN GRANT". The barrels are finished brown, casehardened frame and locks, with blue remaining parts. Double triggers, tang mounted automatic safety with gold "SAFE", extractor and mounted with a checkered splinter forearm and pistol grip stock with casehardened, engraved grip cap, cheekpiece, sling eye, checkered iron buttplate and silver initial oval. Information provided by the consignor states that this rifle was completed July 29, 1887 and described as a breech loading centerfire 500 caliber double rifle with 28 inch barrels built to order for Henry May Esq. The rifle comes in a leather bound hard takedown case with brass corner protectors, double straps and green felt lining. In the case are two nickel snap caps and a 5 count box of Kynoch .500 caliber, Nitro for "Black Powder" Express rifle cartridges, with a 3 inch case.

I think [the above rifle] is a Westley Richards "droplock". Which is a variation of the Anson & Deeley boxlock - One in that the internal locks can be removed and replaced with ease. Which is a very nice feature indeed if one of the locks should break when you are out in the wilderness of Namibia and a two or three day drive (or sixteen hour plane ride) from the nearest skilled gunsmith. There are several of them at Westley Richards shop up in Bozeman, Montana. It's a neat feature, but like everything having to do with the English Doubles (rifle and shotgun) it's a pricey feature. --Jcordell (talk) 20 April 2016
