Hyde Carbine M1944 - .30 Carbine

The Hyde 1944 Carbine is an American carbine (officially classified as a submachine gun). The weapon was designed in 1944 by George Hyde, better known for his work on the M2 Hyde, M3 / M3A1 "Grease Gun", and FP-45 Liberator. Chambered in .30 Carbine, the Hyde 1944 was an attempt to design a "light rifle" for the US military and is primarily based on the Thompson Submachine Gun and was made from pressed steel to reduce weight and simplify production. One of the more notable features is the inclusion of a quick-change barrel system, not unlike the one found on the MG42. The actual merit of this feature on a light carbine, however, is dubious.

The weapon was not produced or developed past the prototype stages and no examples are known to still exist.
