The Type 86S (Chinese: 86S式自動步槍 / 86S shì zìdòng bùqiāng / "Type 86S automatic rifle") is a Chinese semi-automatic bullpup rifle based on the AK-47. The rifle was exported by Norinco and was branded as a Norinco weapon, though its actual designers and manufacturers are unknown (Norinco themselves do not have manufacturing capabilities).
The Type 86S was rather clunky and did not exhibit fine fit or finish. It was exported for civilian use and it was sold worldwide in hopes of cashing in on the 'bullpup market' that many expected to explode in the 1980s, however despite offerings like the Steyr AUG, bullpup sales never took off.
One of the reasons why the Type 86S was not a big seller was that it was considered rather 'ugly' by many firearms enthusiasts in the 1980s. The barrel compensator was disparagingly called the 'fishlips" due to its unusual shape. There were two types of the Type 86S, featuring a straight and curved charging handle respectively.
