Doctor's daughter Pelagia and fisherman Mandras fall in love with each other in the untouched idyll of Kefalonia. But her love is disturbed by the Second World War and the invasion of Italian troops. Mandras joins the resistance and she stays alone. But then she meets the Italian officer Antonio Corelli, who kindles a new love in her. The two approach each other but soon threaten new trouble. After the Italians decided in 1943 not to fight on the side of the Germans, there is a conflict between the former allies.
