7.58 Minenwerfer is a German 7.58cm infantry mortar. Put into service in 1909. Based on the experience of the Russo-Japanese War, in which Japanese artillery failed to successfully engage Russian defensive positions during the siege of Port Arthur, the German Empire developed the first plunging fire guns for close combat against dugouts.
