|
Sniper Elite III is a tactical third-person shooter stealth video game developed and published by Rebellion Developments. The game is a prequel to its predecessor Sniper Elite V2, released in 2012, and is the third part of the Sniper Elite series. The game is set about three years before the events of V2, after Office of Strategic Services officer Karl Fairburne learns about a secret wonder weapon programmed by the Nazis while participating in the North African conflict during World War II.
The game retains and builds on the mechanics of Sniper Elite V2. Players go through large battlefield maps based on the North African conflict. The sniper rifle is the player's main weapon, but additional weapons are available, including submachine guns and pistols, silenced or not, depending on the situation. In addition to hand grenades, the player can use tripwire booby traps, land mines, and dynamite. Binoculars can be used to mark enemies and indicate their position and movements. The player character must hold his breath to aim the shot correctly. A red icon is displayed in the area, marking the projected point of impact. There are weapon parts scattered throughout the game that are found when scavenging dead enemies, allowing players to customize their weapons in the menu before use; the menu also allows equipment loading.
The stealth mechanic was revamped. An eye icon will blink or open to indicate the player's detection level by the enemy. Enemy soldiers will also have a circle counter above their heads to indicate alert status. Players are also forced to move periodically to avoid detection with a white ghost image to mark their last known position, and the enemy will search a larger area. As in the previous game, loud sounds can be used to mask sniper shots.
In addition, unlike the first game and V2, all weapons in the same category now share ammunition.
The following weapons appear in the video game Sniper Elite III:
Handguns
Colt M1911A1
The American Colt M1911A1 is available with Patriot's Weapon DLC Pack. Described as having a high fire rate, the M1911 lacks a suppressor, but still maintains some power.
High Standard HDM
The American High Standard HDM can be added to the game with the Camo Weapons DLC pack, labeled as the Semi-Auto HDM. It is the only suppressed semi-automatic pistol in the game. While normally only available from the loadout menu, it can be found occasionally in the Save Churchhill DLC missions.
Luger P08
The German Luger P08 is obtained fairly early in the game. It has the fastest rate of fire in the game and holds 7 rounds instead of 8. It's mainly found throughout the campaign in the hands of many Italian and German officers.
Smith & Wesson M1917
The American Smith & Wesson M1917 can be obtained with the Hunter DLC pack. Its stats are almost identical to the Webley, apart from being less powerful.
Tokarev TT-33
The Soviet Tokarev TT-33 is available in the Eastern Front DLC.
Walther P38
The German Walther P38 is available with the Axis Weapons DLC Pack.
Webley Mk. VI
The British Webley Mk VI is the most powerful handgun in the game; however, it is used in single-action mode.
Welrod Mark I
The Mark I variant of the Welrod is the first pistol Karl acquires. It's available in the base game and has the benefit of being suppressed. However, the Welrod has a slow rate of fire, and only one hit kills soldiers with headshots. Like in the previous game, the Welrod is incorrectly modeled with the front sight at the muzzle end like on the Mark II, rather than halfway along the suppressor's body as on a real Mark I; on top of this, the suppressor itself appears to have been modeled at about two-thirds its actual length. In addition you can only have one magazine of reserve ammo now, giving it a unique low max ammo cap compared to the other pistols and it can also be rarely found in enemy supply crates.
Submachine Guns
Beretta Model 38A
The Italian Beretta Model 38A submachine gun is available with the Axis Weapons DLC Pack.
Błyskawica
The Polish Błyskawica is available in the Eastern Front DLC pack.
M3 Grease Gun
The American M3 Grease Gun is available in the Patriot's DLC pack. Described as having a distinctive look and sound to it, the Grease Gun has a relatively low fire rate, but decent damage. The weapon is also anachronistic to the time period, as the Grease Gun never saw widespread usage until 1944.
MP40
The German MP40 is the second submachine gun obtained by Karl and is the standard axis SMG. It is more powerful and accurate than the Sten and has a greater range than the Thompson.
Sten Mk. II
A Canadian Sten Mk II is Karl's first submachine gun. The Sten is inferior to every automatic weapon in the game in most catagories but it has the highest range of the base-game submachine guns. It is also worth noting that the Canadian version of the Sten Mk. II was not used in combat until August 1942 - two months after the events in the game.
Thompson M1A1
The American Thompson M1A1 is the last submachine gun unlocked. It fires very powerful rounds and is fairly accurate in short bursts. Unlike in real life, the Thompson holds 32 rounds, instead of 30. Also, the M1A1 did not begin production until October 1942, four whole months after the events in the game.
Assault Rifles
Sturmgewehr 44
The German Sturmgewehr 44 can be downloaded with the Camo DLC pack, labeled the MP44. It has a rather ugly green and yellow paint scheme on it and is the only assault rifle in the game. It is anachronistic, as the MP43 (essentially the same as the StG 44, but with minor differences) was first fielded in 1943.
Shotguns
Winchester Model 1897 "Trench Gun"
The American Winchester Model 1897 "Trench Gun" is available in the Hunters DLC Pack and is the only shotgun in the game. While it delivers high damage, the weapon has a slow rate of fire, and the weapon becomes fairly inaccurate when firing in quick succession. It notably makes an appearance in the "Save Churchill" DLC missions, being used by the fictional "Schutzvollstrecker" unit who in addition to other weapons, sometimes use (presumably captured) Trench Guns against Karl.
Sniper Rifles
Arisaka Type 99
The Japanese Arisaka Type 99 sniper rifle is available in the Axis Weapons DLC Pack.
Carcano M91/41
The Italian Carcano M91/41 is the second bolt action rifle unlocked. Described as having higher damage than the M1 Garand, the Carcano is one of the most powerful snipers in the game. The Carcano M91/41 is the only weapon used by the Italian soldiers that fits them as they otherwise all reuse German weaponry (Including the MP40 submachine gun due to the Beretta Model 38A being DLC).
Gewehr 43
A Gewehr 43 with a ZF 4 scope is the third sniper unlocked. The weapon is considered anachronistic since the game takes place in 1942. A more accurate weapon would be the Mauser Kar98k, which isn't present in the base game, despite being on the box cover art. Like V2, it is depicted as the main rifle of the German Army.
Hybrid M1914/17 Enfield rifle
The American M1917 Enfield is part of the Sniper Rifle DLC pack. It's described in-game for being known as the "American Enfield". The game, however, modeled the rifle with the lower receiver of the M1917, but with the scope mount and stock of the British P14. It should be noted that no sniper variants of the M1917 were used by American snipers, the majority being M1903A4 rifles. The P14 was known for having a telescopic scope attached, but fires the British .303 instead of the American .30-06.
Lee-Enfield No. 1 Mk. III* (HT)
The British Lee-Enfield No.1 Mk.III* with an HT sniper scope is known for having very high stopping power and having a magazine on par with the Gewehr 43.
M1D Garand
The American M1D Garand with M84 scope is Karl's preferred sniper rifle and is the first sniper given to the player. Described in-game as having a high rate of fire, with relatively good power. It should be noted that even the M1C, an even earlier form of the M1D Garand sniper, saw limited action in World War II, and it wasn't available during the North African campaign.
Mauser Karabiner 98k
The Karabiner 98k is available in the "Sniper" rifle DLC pack, as well as on the front cover of the game. While early game screenshots showed the weapon in the base game, it appeared to be cut from the final version. It's described as being the standard issue sniper rifle of the German Army, or Wehrmacht.
Mosin Nagant M91/30
The Russian Mosin Nagant M91/30 is available in the Camo DLC pack; as the DLC's name suggests, it is able to be wrapped in the iconic white cloth used by some snipers on the Eastern Front. The weapon performs similar to the Carcano bolt action rifle. This along with the Tokarev SVT 40 and the Tokarev TT33 they are the only Soviet weapons in the game.
Springfield M1903A4
The American M1903A4 Springfield is available in the Patriot's weapon DLC pack. It's described as having a high muzzle velocity and as a standard issue sniper for American snipers. There is also another variant part of the "Sniper" DLC pack that adds an "upgraded" version of the Springfield. This tuned version has more stopping power and a higher muzzle velocity. The tuned version also has a lighter wood finish than the stock variant. Outside of DLC, the weapon only appears in an unscoped and unusable variation, oddly propped up on walls near areas the game identifies as "sniper nests" with what appear to be British Brodie helmets hung over the muzzle.
Tokarev SVT-40
A Tokarev SVT-40 with a PU scope is available in the Hunter DLC pack and is similar to some respects to the Gewehr 43. It's described as having a higher rate of fire than the Gewehr 43, but with lower zoom and lower damage.
Launchers
Lee-Enfield Smoke Discharger
British Matilda tanks are equipped with Lee-Enfield Smoke Dischargers.
RPzB 54 Panzerschreck
The RPzB 54 Panzerschreck is a shoulder-fired rocket launcher and is very effective against armored vehicles of many sorts. In the "Survival" game mode, the Panzerschreck is found on the ground in different parts of the map.
"Panzerschreck Teufel-Feuer RPzB 60/1"
The "Teufelsfeuer" is a fictional improved version of the Panzerschreck, with a non-usable scope and holding ten rockets at once, it only appears in the "Save Churchill" DLC missions.
Grenades & Explosives
Model 24 Stielhandgranate
The Model 24 Stielhandgranate is once again used as the standard hand grenade in the game.
S-Mine
The S-Mine can be used in-game.
Tellermine 35 (Stahl)
The Tellermine 35 (Stahl) appears as simply the "Land Mine". Useful for setting traps against enemy armor, as it is noted to have a small trigger radius.
TNT
TNT Charges appear and have a similar role to the Dynamite from V2, it can be shot to detonate it and a new item, the Flint and Steel (used to set small fires mainly to distract enemies) can be used to ignite the fuse for a timed explosion.
POMZ-2
The POMZ-2 anti-personnel mine is once again used as a tripwire trap and finally the player can actually disarm their own POMZ-2 mines to reuse them if they weren't set off.
Mounted Weapons
8.8 cm Flak 37
In the third mission "Halfaya Pass" Karl gets the task to destroy three 8.8cm Flak 37 anti-air guns.
15 cm Nebelwerfer 41
The 15 cm Nebelwerfer 41 multiple rocket launchers are seen during the first mission "Siege of Tobruk" and mission 6 - "Kasserine Pass".
Besa
The Besa machine gun is seen mounted in British Matilda Tanks.
Bren
A Bren machine gun is seen used by the LRDG in one of the drawn cutscenes.
Flakvierling 38
The Flakvierling 38 appears in-game and is called the "flakvierling AA-gun".
Hispano-Suiza HS.404
During the fifth mission "Siwa Oasis" and the sixth mission "Kasserine Pass", several Supermarine Spitfire fighters fly over the map to provide noise protection. The two wing-mounted Hispano-Suiza HS.404 cannons are visible.
MG15
Ju 87 "Stuka" dive bombers are equipped with rear-mounted MG15. However, the wing-mounted MG17s are not modeled.
MG 34 Panzerlauf
German tanks like the Panzer III, IV, and Tiger have MG 34 Panzerlauf in coaxial mount.
MG42
The MG42 is seen as a mounted machine gun in the hands of Italian and German soldiers. It has a relatively slower rate of fire when compared to other games, but is still very powerful against infantry.
Ordnance QF 2-pounder
The Ordnance QF 2-pounder Anti-Tank Gun is seen mounted on British Matilda II tanks.
Ordnance QF 25-pounder
Vickers Mk. I
A Vickers machine gun is seen mounted on British Bedford MW trucks that can be seen during the missions "Halfaya Pass", "Siwa Oasis", and "Pont Du Fahs Airfield". In the airfield mission, it is referred to as LRDG (Long Range Desert Group).
