Dunkirk is a 2017 American-British-French-German World War II film directed by Christopher Nolan that tells the story of the evacuation of surrounded British, Belgian and French troops from Dunkirk in 1940 (Operation Dynamo). The film's cast includes Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Fionn Whitehead, Jack Lowden, Cillian Murphy and One Direction member Harry Styles. Frequent Christopher Nolan collaborator Michael Caine has a cameo role as the radio voice of "Fortis Leader", which perhaps is a nod to his role in the 1969 movie Battle of Britain. The story had previously been told in a similarly-named 1958 film Dunkirk.
Note: The screenshots seen here will be of varying sizes due to the change in aspect ratio throughout the film.
The following weapons were used in the film Dunkirk:
WARNING! THIS PAGE CONTAINS SPOILERS!
Revolvers
Webley .38 Mk. IV
Colonel Winnant (James D'Arcy) carries a Webley .38 Mk IV revolver in his 1937 canvas holster.
Rifles
Lee-Enfield No. 1 Mk. III*
British soldiers including Tommy (Fionn Whitehead) and Alex (Harry Styles) are seen carrying Lee-Enfield No. 1 Mk III* rifles. Some of them are mockups with straight bolt handles and smaller barrels.
SMLE Mockup
Some rifle mockups can be seen resembling real Lee-Enfield rifles.
MAS-36
French soldiers use MAS-36 rifles.
Karabiner 98k
The Karabiner 98k is briefly seen carried by a German soldier during the capture of Farrier (Tom Hardy).
Submachine Guns
MP40
The MP40 is briefly seen carried by a German soldier during the capture.
Machine Guns
Chatellerault M1924/29
A French soldier in a rearguard position mans a Chatellerault M1924/29.
Hotchkiss Mle. 1914
A Hotchkiss M1914 is also seen in the same rearguard position manned by French soldiers.
Vickers K
Vickers K machine guns are fitted to British Motor Torpedo Boats. This is potentially anachronistic because as a general rule Motor Torpedo Boats at the time were fitted with ground pattern Lewis Guns, not being replaced with the Vickers K until 1942. The actual boat used during production is MTB 102 which was actually present during the real Dunkirk evacuation (acting as the flagship for Rear Admiral Wake-Walker), and is, in fact, the sole surviving Royal Navy vessel that participated in the operation.
Bren Mk. I
A Bren Mk. I is fired from an anti-aircraft mount on a Royal Navy destroyer. At least one British soldier carries a Bren gun.
Heavy Weapons
Bofors 40mm
Several Bofors 40mm AA guns are seen used by British soldiers at Dunkirk.
Oerlikon 20mm Cannon
Oerlikon 20mm Cannons are mounted on the British Motor Torpedo Boat and the Destroyer Maillé-Brézé.
Other
Webley & Scott No. 4 Mk. I Signal Pistol
Webley & Scott No. 4 Mk. I signal pistols are carried by the Spitfire pilots Farrier (Tom Hardy) and Collins (Jack Lowden).
Browning .303 Mk II*
The Spitfires are armed with eight Browning .303 Mk II* machine guns.
Hispano Aviación HA-1112
The Hispano Aviación HA-1112, which portrayed German Messerschmitt Bf 109 E fighters, is armed with Hispano-Suiza HS.404 20mm cannons.
Bolingbroke Mk. IVT
A Bolingbroke Mk IVT maritime patrol aircraft portrays a Bristol 142 Blenheim Mk. I bomber.
Destroyer Maillé-Brézé
The French destroyer Maillé-Brézé (D627) portrayed the British destroyers HMS Vivacious and HMS Vanquisher. In order to play both British ships at once, the destroyer simultaneously had the pennant number of Vivacious (D36) painted on her port side and that of Vanquisher (D54) on her starboard.
