The American Friend (original title Der amerikanische Freund) is a 1977 German/French crime drama directed by Wim Wenders and based on the novel "Ripley's Game" by Patricia Highsmith.
Another cinema adaptation of the same novel is Ripley's Game (2002) directed by Liliana Cavani and starring John Malkovich and Dougray Scott.
The following weapons were used in the film The American Friend:
Revolvers
Smith & Wesson Model 36
Tom Ripley's (Dennis Hopper) personal firearm is a Smith & Wesson Model 36 revolver.
Smith & Wesson .44 Hand Ejector 2nd Model
During the scene in the train Jonathan Zimmermann (Bruno Ganz) is armed with a large frame revolver that appears to be a Smith & Wesson .44 Hand Ejector 2nd Model.
Pistols
Compact Beretta pistol
A compact pistol with distinctive Beretta features is used by Jonathan Zimmermann (Bruno Ganz) in the scene in Paris. It is seen only partially but its size and the shape of the business end allow to guess that it's a Beretta M1919 or Beretta 418.
Walther PPK
When Raoul Minot (Gérard Blain) appears in Zimmermann's house, he is armed with a Walther PPK.
Luger P04
In the final scene a hitman is armed with a pistol that appears to be a Luger P04 with its 15-cm barrel.
