The Outpost is a 2020 war film directed by Rod Lurie and adapted from the 2012 non-fiction book The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor by Jake Tapper. The film depicts the real-life Battle of Kamdesh, which occurred on October 3, 2009 when Taliban fighters assaulted U.S. Army soldiers at Combat Outpost Keating in Afghanistan's Nuristan Province, resulting in one of the bloodiest battles of the War in Afghanistan. The film stars Scott Eastwood as Staff Sergeant Clinton Romesha and Caleb Landry Jones as Specialist Ty Carter, who both earned the Medal of Honor for their actions during the battle.
The following weapons were used in the film The Outpost:
Rifles/Carbines
M4A1 Carbine
The M4A1 Carbine is used by nearly all of the U.S. Army soldiers at Combat Outpost Keating (COP Keating), including Staff Sergeant Clint Romesha (Scott Eastwood) and Specialist Ty Carter (Caleb Landry Jones). The M4A1 Carbines are all fitted with ACOG sights and side-mounted AN/PEQ-2 laser aiming modules.
AK-47
The Taliban fighters who assault COP Keating are mostly armed with AK-47 variants. Local villagers and Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers are also seen with AK-47s.
Arsenal AR-F
Bulgarian Arsenal AR-F rifles are used by Taliban fighters, likely due to the fact that most of the film was shot in Bulgaria.
SVD Dragunov
SSG Clint Romesha (Scott Eastwood) uses a SVD Dragunov sniper rifle taken from an Afghan soldier to engage an enemy sniper during the Battle of Kamdesh.
Handguns
Beretta 92FS
The Beretta 92FS, standing in for the Beretta M9, are used by the officers at the outpost, including Captain Benjamin Keating (Orlando Bloom), Captain Sylvanius Broward (Kwame D. Patterson), and medical officer Captain Chris Cordova (George Arvidson). Specialist Daniel Rodriguez (portraying himself) is seen using a Beretta 92FS when responding to the initial Taliban attack.
Makarov PM
A Makarov PM pistol is seen in the hands of ANA Commander Zahid (Ahmad Sakhi).
Machine Guns
FN M240B
M240B GPMGs are used by U.S. Army soldiers while defending the outpost, most notably by Staff Sergeant Justin T. Gallegos (Jacob Scipio). SSG Romesha also uses a M240B during the Battle of Kamdesh.
FN Minimi (Modified to resemble M249 Paratrooper)
A modified FN Minimi, standing in for the M249 SAW Paratrooper, is used by U.S. Army soldiers during the battle. The weapon appears to have been an older model FN Minimi with its barrel shortened and a paratrooper stock added based on the retention of the flared flash hider and straight carry handle. The Minimi is also equipped with an ELCAN M145 sight to resemble the M249s used by American troops.
PK Machine Gun
A PK Machine Gun is seen next to a dead Taliban fighter after the battle.
Browning M2HB
Browning M2HB machine guns are mounted on the armored Humvees that are based at COP Keating.
M230 Chain Gun
The M230 Chain Gun is used by the AH-64 Apaches that arrive to provide air support.
Missile Launchers
M136 AT4
Sergeant Josh Kirk (Jack Kesy) retrieves a M136 AT4 rocket launcher when responding to the Taliban assault.
RPG-7
Taliban fighters use RPG-7 rocket launchers to attack the outpost during the battle.
Other
M203 Grenade Launcher
M203 Grenade Launchers are mounted on some of the soldiers' M4A1 carbines.
M18A1 Claymore
Specialist Rodriguez attempts to detonate M18A1 Claymore mines during the battle as the Taliban overrun the mortar pit, only to have them fail to detonate.
M67 Hand Grenade
M67 Hand Grenades are used by COP Keating's defenders during the Battle of Kamdesh.
M120 Mortar
A 120mm M120 mortar is used by the soldiers at COP Keating to provide fire support.
