When I lived in Chicago, it must have been between prohibition and the gangland wars it is so well known for now. The (lagely gun) violence, mostly downtown, is not or should not be the only defining feature of this wonderful town!

That said, I’m much more familiar with the Southeastern US as an adult, esp Atlanta. We have quite a share of shootings here; on a hot, muggy summer’s day there are typically 5 or 6 in the greater metro area. Gun culture is, in fact, so much established as a normal part of the social mix it was inevitable that I would eventually buy a Beretta 96FS and punch some paper at 30yards.
