The Scarlet Claw is an American 1944 detective movie, directed by Roy William Neill and starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. This is the eighth installment to the series of fourteen Sherlock Holmes films starring Rathbone and Bruce. The plot isn't adapted from any Arthur Conan Doyle work but it bears resemblance to The Hound of the Baskervilles. During their visit to Quebec in Canada, Holmes and Watson are involved in the case of the legendary monster of La Mort Rouge (literally "the red death") village. The locals are convinced that this is the monster who killed Lady Penrose, but Holmes uncovers the man behind the crime.
The following weapons were used in the film The Scarlet Claw:
Revolvers
Colt Detective Special
Sherlock Holmes' (Basil Rathbone) revolver is a Colt Detective Special.
Colt Police Positive
Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) carries a Colt Police Positive revolver. Same looking revolvers are seen in hands of Lord Penrose (Paul Cavanagh) and of a constable in the final scene.
Colt Official Police
Police Sergeant Thompson's (David Clyde) sidearm is a large frame Colt, most likely a Colt Official Police. It is a military issued version, with lanyard ring.
Iver Johnson Bulldog
Alistair Ramson (Gerald Hamer) carries an Iver Johnson Bulldog in several scenes. The revolver appears to be the same Model 1900 with ivory grips that was seen in several other movies of the series.
Rifles
Winchester Model 1894
During the final hunt for Ramson two of La Mort Rouge villagers carry Winchester Model 1894 rifles. A Winchester M1894 is also seen in Sgt. Thompson's gun rack.
Sporterized Mauser Rifle
Bolt action hunting/sporting rilfes are seen in several scenes, but they all appear to be the same prop, reused several times. The rifle is most likely a sporterized military Mauser, judging by the details of the stock.
Shotguns
Winchester Model 1897 or Model 1912
Winchester pump action shotguns are seen in Sgt. Thompson's gun rack and in hands of villagers. There are two guns, one with long hunting barrel and another in Riot configuration. Receivers of these shotguns are seen only partially, so it's hard to determine if these are Model 1897 or Model 1912 but the Riot gun bears more resemblance with Model 1897.
Double Barreled Shotgun
A double barreled shotgun is seen in the gun rack.
