A Smith and Wesson Model 586 is carried by FBI Special Agent Warren Stantin (Sidney Poitier) in the film. (At the time, personally owned .357 and .38 spl revolvers were allowed for FBI agents under supervisor's permission, when this agency still used wheelguns.)

Jonathan Knox (Tom Berenger) is seen carrying a Winchester Model 1894 as he guides Stantin through the forest.

I believe this is actually a Marlin Model 336. Pay close attention to the fact that it has a side eject bolt.
