The ASh-12.7 (Avtomat Shturmovoy > "Automatic Storming Rifle" - 12.7mm calibre) is a Close Quarters Battle or Dynamic Entry weapon. It is useful in penetrating cover or breaching doors. It can also be used to neutralize targets that are behind cover and/or wearing body armor.
Early models had an integral carry handle with a Picatinny rail across the top. Later models had a "flat-top" with a detachable carry handle and a monolithic Picatinny rail across the top. There are short Picatinny rails along the sides of the forend for mounting accessories. There is also a long Picatinny rail under the forend that can mount either a vertical foregrip or a 40mm muzzle-loading grenade launcher. The barrel can mount either a muzzle brake or a silencer.
