Colt Official Police

Ira Wells (Art Carney) owns, and uses a Colt Official Police, which is appropriate considering that he is supposed to have been a private investigator since 1946. At one point Lamar (John Considine) takes it, by force, from Ira, who gets it back.

Colt Official Police - 4" Barrel - .38 Special
Ira (Art Carney) fires back at a midnight attacker.
Lamar (John Considine) takes Ira's (Art Carney) Colt from him.
Ira (Art Carney) is once again in charge.

Colt Trooper

Laura Birdwell (Joanna Cassidy) uses a long barreled Colt Trooper. Ira Wells (Art Carney) identifies it as a Colt .357 Magnum.

Lamar (John Considine) primary sidearm of choice is the Smith & Wesson Model 39 with a suppressor. Later, it is used by Charlie Hatter (Bill Macey). In the script it is referred to as a ".45".

In a bit of turnaround Ira (Art Carney) now has the drop on Birdwell (Eugene Roche) and Lamar (John Considine).

Colt Model 1903 Hammerless

A nickel plated Colt Model 1903 with pearl grips plays a pivotal role in the plot. It is also used by Ron Birdwell (Eugene Roche). At one point in the movie it is identified as a "32 auto".
