Hornblower: Mutiny
|
Hornblower: Mutiny is the fifth installment of the Hornblower series of British historical war television films based on the works of C.S. Forester and starring Ioan Gruffudd as Royal Navy officer Horatio Hornblower during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. In Mutiny, set in 1801, Hornblower is the third Lieutenant aboard HMS Renown that heads to Santo Domingo under the command of the famous Captain James Sawyer. Soon it turns out that Sawyer is mentally unstable and irrationally suspects his officers plotting against him. Captain plans to arrest the officers when he falls head-first into the hold under mysterious circumstances. He is incapable of resuming command, and Buckland, the first lieutenant, takes charge. The film is based on the first part of the novel Lieutenant Hornblower.
The following weapons were used in the film Hornblower: Mutiny:
Pistols
Duelling Flintlock Pistol
Captain James Sawyer (David Warner) owns a matched pair of Flintlock Pistols. These guns have an unusual combination of faceted barrel, typical for target or duelling pistols, belt hook that is seen on naval service pistols, and captured swivel ramrod, similar to the one used on the New Land Pattern pistols. For the most part, except for the ramrod and the belt hook, these guns resemble Pedersoli replica of Charles Moore Duelling Pistol.
Heavy Dragoon Pistol
In the opening scene a Marines officer carries a Heavy Dragoon Flintlock Pistol.
Muskets
Brown Bess Flintlock Musket
Royal Marines carry Brown Bess Flintlock Muskets.
Other Weapons
Swivel Gun
Swivel Guns are mounted on HMS Renown.
Ship-of-the-line HMS Renown carries 12-pounder guns on the top deck and 24- or 32-pounder guns on the main deck. The live action on the quarterdeck and the gundeck was shot on HMS Victory. The large cannons have flintlock ignition that is seen very close and detailed.
