Signum Laudis (English title: The Medal) is a 1980 Czechoslovak war film. The story takes place on the Eastern Front of WWI. Corporal Hoferik (Vlado Müller), a devoted soldier in service to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, leads a daring, but costly attack on an enemy position. For this, he is awarded the Signum Laudis, a medal for military merit. But when the tides turn and his unit's position is surrounded by the enemy, Corporal Hoferik learns the hard way that the officers who once praised him and he respected will do anything to save their own skins.

The film's title refers to the Military Merit Medal (German: Militär-Verdienstmedaille), an Austro-Hungarian war medal, often referred to as the "Signum Laudis" (Latin for "sign of praise"), the inscription present on the reverse side of the medal.
