Name

Very old question, but I came across soemthing the other day that might answer it. There was a prototype version of the Skoripion called the XCZ 868 that was in 9x19mm and tried to turn it into a full size SMG or carbine, and apparently this was referred to as the "Evo 2". It never went anywhere though, but when they made the "new" Scorpion they seem to have decided to jump off of this numbering.--commando552 (talk) 13:40, 29 June 2020 (EDT)

Page is wrong

I just watched a forgotten weapons video on this, and turns out that we (along with most of the internet) have the models of this gun screwed up. What we call the CZ Scorpion Evo 3 is actually the Laugo M8A, and the Evo 3 is split into the A and A1 models which can actually be told apart most of the time as there are visible differences. To make matters worse though the civillian models are super confusing as there are corresponding S and S1 version of the auto guns, but it seems that the early S1s were using up remaining S and A parts so although marked S1 they can still mostly have S features and parts. I'm going to try and sort it out but though I should explain here so incase anybody wonders what is going on. --commando552 (talk) 09:14, 8 August 2022 (EDT)

That reveal about the A / A1 nomenclature difference is surprising, considering that CZ themselves have been referring early versions as "A1" (heck, the weapon actually has A1 markings). By the way, I noticed that the Evo 3 A picture that we have on the page is an early version with a different folding stock mechanism compared to later models. --Ultimate94ninja (talk) 13:25, 8 August 2022 (EDT)

It may be the A1s are the same as the S1s in that the early versions have a mix of old and new parts. For example that one above has the new selector and hand stop, but the old sights and magazine catch. The receivers on these confuse me, as it seems bizare that at some point they altered the mould to change the markings from "CZ SORPION A" to "CZ SCORPION EVO 3 A1" but kept the old sling loop design, and then later did a new mould for the new sling loop design. I'm also starting to think that there may be a difference in the Czech guns and the guns that you get for CZ USA, as the current image on the CZ USA site for the Evo 3 A1 has the A style mag catch and a receiver that at first glance looks like an A as it has the sling slot, but the swivel hoop looks like it is beefed up so there may be something weird where the US receivers are actually different to the Czech ones. --commando552 (talk) 17:52, 8 August 2022 (EDT)

Coming back to this, the image on the CZ USA website is just an old one, it's basically a higher res version of the one we had over a decade ago. Here's an A1 with CZ USA markings, and it has the newer features. Anyway, virtually everywhere on the internet, the production models are identified as A1 and S1 (with the corresponding markings), regardless of their parts, even as early as 2011-2012 ([1], [2]). We can see here a couple of images of the earlier Scorpion A model, which is mentioned as a pre-production version (another picture is seen here). At this point, I'm pretty sure that the A and S models indeed were only prototypes (this was implied anyway in the Forgotten Weapons video at the 14:56 mark), and that the early A1 and S1 models had most parts of the A and S, only to be gradually improved with newer parts later. Thus, I don't think it was correct to identify the guns in multiple of our media pages as A / S models (especially the movies/TV series), unless there's some very clear evidence in favor of this. --Ultimate94ninja (talk) 22:25, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

As for the differences between the A / S and the early A1 / S1 models, there's the markings on the left side and the folding stock mechanism as seen on the right side (though the Scorpion A in the FW video is an exception, as it has the later folding mechanism seen on the A1). Additionally, I'm almost certain that all the A1 / S1 versions have the newer enlarged selector (here's one of the earliest examples). On a trivial note, in this 2011 video from CZ, the 3D render shows an A1 (it even has the enlarged selector), whereas the actual weapons used by the actors are the A prototype. Something strange, though, is that in an old archive of the CZ website, images of the weapon show it with the early A parts that I mentioned, but with "CZ SCORPION EVO 3 A1" markings. Maybe this is an early pre-production A1 or some kind of photoshop/digital render, dunno. --Ultimate94ninja (talk)
