Beretta BM59

Are you SURE those rifles the Marines use aren't Beretta BM59s?Foofbun 09:10, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

Actually I do not believe they were either M-14s or Beretta BM59s. The BM-59 was not available in the US until the mid-late 80s and, at the time the movie was made, likewise for the M-14/M-1A. If you look closely these appear to be M-1 Garands with some sort of mocked up flash suppressor and extended magazine attached. Something similar was seen in the movie adaptation of "A Rumor of War" when the M-14 was not available similar faux weapons were used. Also you see, among other weapons, a standard M-1 Garand and an M-1 carbine (particularly in the first pic). --Charon68 10:08, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
  • Thanks for that Charon. I was using an M14 when the film came out and knew they weren't M14s. The mocked up Garand makes sense as some of the gun magazines at the time were advertising coversions for your M1 to take a fixed magazine you'd load by stripper clips. I'm surprised the National Guard at the time didn't adopt that...Foofbun 19:17, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
My pleasure. Actually, if I remember the article I read in SOF, due to the nature of the movie "A Rumor of War" could not get the weapons and was forced to use the mocked up Garands. There was problem because, during filming, the camera had to cut away after seven shots during battle scenes because, of course, on the eighth the en bloc clip of the Garand would eject. --Charon68 22:04, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
That was apparently common in the 1970s and 1980s. They are Garands, mocked up. These mocked up garands actually show up in the armory scene in the Arnold film Commando. Go to the Commando page and scroll to the last pic. There is a rack of those 'faux' Garand M14 mockups. MoviePropMaster2008 22:49, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
  • Wow! I wish I could get such quick expert advice from everywhere else! Thanks! I never twigged on about the Garands in 'A Rumor of War', thought they were the real deal...Re the non McNamara helmet covers and the unstartched utilities; maybe they used the 'Gomer Pyle USMC' costumes...Foofbun 06:35, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
