Talk:Desert Combat
Code
Desert Combat is a popular game mod for Battlefield: 1942, developed by Trauma Studios. It was first released in 2003, with the final version in 2004. It depicts combat of the 1991 Gulf War, with the US Army "Coalition" forces against the Iraqi Army "Opposition" forces. Like the Battlefield series, it depicts large-scale combined-forces engagements, with class-based loadouts and a wide variety of usable vehicles.
The following weapons are seen in the game mod Desert Combat:
Handguns
Beretta M9
The Beretta M9 is the standard-issue sidearm of the US Army, called "M9 Pistol" in-game. The Beretta is issued to the Assault, Sniper, Heavy Gunner, and Anti-Armor kits. It has a fifteen-round capacity, medium power, and is reliably accurate. Like in many older games, the hammer is always shown as decocked.
Browning Hi-Power
The Browning Hi-Power is the standard sidearm of the Iraqi Army in-game, and is issued to the Assault, Sniper, Heavy Gunner, and Anti-Armor kits. It performs identically to the Beretta M9, but has a thirteen-round magazine.
Heckler & Koch Mark 23
The Heckler & Koch Mark 23 is the sidearm of the US Special Forces class, called "Mk. 23 SOCOM". Its accuracy and power are comparable to the standard handguns in-game, the only difference being a smaller capacity and a suppressor for quieter firing. Has an incorrect eight-round capacity.
PSS Silent Pistol
The PSS Silent Pistol is issued only to the Iraqi Special Forces class, called "PSS". Its accuracy and damage are average, the only difference being its quiet report. It has an incorrect eight-round capacity.
Assault Rifles
M16A2
The M16A2 (with M203) is the standard assault rifle of the US Army, issued to the Assault kit. It is called "M16A2 Assault Rifle". It is fitted with the distinctive heat shield and folding grenade sights. It is powerful and accurate, with moderate recoil, and provides a decent amount of zoom. It is a strong all-round weapon for medium range.
While the real M16A2 fires in three-round burst, the in-game weapon is fully-automatic, like the M16A1 and M16A3. Also, its reload animation incorrectly shows the player acting as if there were an AK-style charging handle on the left side of the receiver. (All assault rifles use this animation.)
AK-47
The AK-47 is the assault rifle for the Iraqi Army, and like the M16A2, is issued to the Assault kit. It is fitted with a GP-30 grenade launcher. Like the M16A2, it is a strong and accurate all-around weapon.
Colt Model 733
The Colt Model 733 is issued to the US Special Forces kit, called "CAR-15". It is fitted with a suppressor and a usable ACOG scope. The scope provides an unobstructed view for precise aiming, but provides very little zoom, less than the M16A2 and AK-47. Compared to the Assault-class weapons, it performs similarly but has a shorter effective range.
AKS-74U
The AKS-74U is issued to the Iraqi Special Forces kit. Unlike its Coalition counterpart, it has neither a scope nor a suppressor, but otherwise performs identically to the CAR-15.
Sniper Rifles
M25 Sniper Weapon System
The M25 Sniper Weapon System is the rifle issued to the US Sniper kit, called "M-25 Sniper". It is very powerful, requiring 1-2 hits to kill, and has a twenty-round magazine. It can be fired fairly quickly, but has high recoil.
Tabuk Sniper Rifle
The Iraqi-made Tabuk Sniper Rifle is issued to the Iraqi Sniper kit, and performs identically to the M25. It has a Russian-style stacked-chevron scope reticle.
Shotguns
Remington 870 Marine Magnum
The Remington 870 Marine Magnum is the weapon issued to the US Support kit, and is called "M12 Shotgun". It is extremely powerful, easily killing an enemy even at medium range. It has an eight-round capacity and can be fired moderately quickly, but is slower than the Saiga, due to its pump action operation.
Due to Battlefield 1942's reloading system, it has three reserve "magazines", and any shells remaining in the gun when reloading are lost. (This system makes sense for weapons with removable magazines, but is rather odd on a shotgun with a magazine tube.)
Saiga 12K
The Saiga 12K is the weapon issued to the Iraqi Support kit. It has an eight-round capacity. It is marginally weaker than the Remington 870, but can be fired quickly due to its semi-automatic operation.
Machine Guns
M249-E1 SAW
The M249-E1 SAW is the LMG issued to the US Heavy Gunner kit, called "M249 LMG". It has a capacity of 100 rounds. It has abysmal accuracy when standing, but is very accurate when in prone stance, even in sustained fire. It has an overheat meter when firing.
PKM Machine Gun
The PKM Machine Gun is issued to the Iraqi Heavy Gunner kit, called "PK Machine gun". it performs similarly to the M249-E1, and has a 100-round capacity.
