The Laughing Policeman is a 1973 crime thriller based on the 1968 novel "Den Skrattande Polisen" ("The Laughing Policeman") written by Swedish crime novelist-duo "Sjöwall-Wahlöö". The duo also wrote the novel formed the basis for the 1976 movie "The Man on the Roof" (Mannen på taket). The film stars Walter Matthau and Bruce Dern as two SFPD inspectors who investigate a multiple homicide on a city bus, where one of the victims was an off duty police officer.

Smith & Wesson M76

Henry Camerero (Albert Paulsen) appears to be armed with a Smith & Wesson M76 submachine gun that has the barrel shroud removed.Later in the movie the investigating detectives learn that a local Hells Angel member sold an M3A1 Grease Gun to a male subject. It stands to reason that the production was unable to obtain an M3 "Grease Gun" so the S&W Model 76 stood in for one. In some movie posters for the film, different SMG's are depicted as being used, including the MP40 and the Star Model Z45.
