Ira H. Hayes (1923-1955) enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1942. During the Battle of Iwo Jima he was assigned to E Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division and participated in the flag raising on Mount Suribachi.
